Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

Students will extend their knowledge of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering towards relevant problems involving dynamic/cyclic effects, as the ones induced by earthquakes. The fundamental focus of the course ranges from the description of cyclic/dynamic soil behaviour to its implications in geotechnical design in seismic conditions. Practical applications are covered to improve the grasp and use of fundamental principles.


Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The  contents fo the course are taught for students to be able to:


- describe the cyclic/dynamic behaviour of soils over the small-to-large strain range

- obtain cyclic/dynamic parameters describing soil behaviour with laboratory and site testing procedures

- assess the liquefaction risk of a construction site and design mitigation strategies

- apply standard methods for the design of foundations and retaining structures in seismic conditions

- explain real observation of the response of geostructures in seismic conditions

- Laboratory testing of soils in dynamic/cyclic conditions

- In situ determination od soil dynamic properties

- Liquefaction: experimental evidence, theoretical interpretation, assessment, mitigation

- Design of retaining walls in seismic conditions: ultimate and serveicebility limit states

- Design of cantilever walls in sesmic conditions: ultimate and serveicebility limit states

- Dynamic soil-structure interaction

- Design of shallow foundations in seismic conditions

- Design of deep foundation in sesmic conditions

- Seminars given by professionals and researchers on specific issues (e.g. regulations, foundation of bridges...)

 

 


Prerequisiti

- Continuum mechanics;

- Soil mechanics and Geotechnical engineering;

- Engineering seismology;

- Basics of structural engineering;

- Basics of engineering geology.


Modalità di valutazione

Assessment will include an oral exam and written take-home assignments. The former will aim to assess fundamental knowledge and the understanding of theoretical concepts, whereas the ability to bring theoretical knowledge to the solution of practical engineering problems will be evaluated through the latter. Assigments will span the interpretation of experimental data and the design of geostructures in seismic conditions.
