055191 - ENVISIONING AI THROUGH DESIGN
The educational objective of the Design Studio is to acquire the skills for imagining and designing innovative projects which leverage AI technologies. The design process develops from an initial research phase to ideation and finally prototyping and will provide students with a clear understanding of the different requirements of an interactive service that includes AI systems. The Design studio will cover a wide range of project activities carried out in groups and supervised by the teaching staff.

Students will acquire the following competences: - knowledge and understanding - applying design methods and tools for ideating an interactive system that relevantly incorporates AI, and that is meaningful according to the user perspective, the technological perspective and the market perspective; - making judgements - knowing the current potential of AI and being able to critically assess the relevance of introducing this technology into an interactive system; understanding what AI can currently do, what the different applicative domains are, what features it can have and being able to work in team with computer scientists on this topic; - communication skills - autonomously and in group, students develop the ability to present and discuss their projects and the attitude to negotiation in teamwork.
The Design Studio will focus on the development of an interactive service that includes and specifies some AI components. There will be some core components that will be followed in the:
Principles and Practices of Service Design for Digital Transformation: understanding the logic of the system, the specifics to digital services, the different stakeholders involved and their roles and connections, the user journey and the different touchpoints to be developed;
Principles and Practices of Speculative Design for Digital Transformation: understanding how a system interacts (communicates) with the user in the specific context of use (Tools and methods to analyze and design the system). A specific design fiction tool will be used for the speculation phase;
Elements of AI: deep learning, machine learning, image recognition, etc.
The aim of the design studio is for students to learn the possibilities of including AI in various fields to design innovative solutions for public services, private businesses, or personal devices.
To achieve this, the first part of the Design Studio will provide a set of basic skills in interaction design and service design, jointly with an introduction to the fundaments of AI. The course will use a blended learning approach, suggesting readings and other materials through which students can deepen knowledge independently in preparation for discussions during project reviews and tutorials. For example, one of the activities will be to analyze and discuss case studies of AI deployed or in development in the private and public sectors. Unpacking and retro-engineering the cases will help understand the challenges and requirements of these services both in social and technical terms and will help groups to define their design brief for the development of their own projects. In the second part of the Design Studio, students will put in practice the skills acquired in the theoretical section, by developing their own project. The aim of the exercise will be to design a new interactive service, develop a physical prototype, and draft the architecture of the system.
Students will work in groups. Teachers will deliver theoretical lectures and engage in regular and systematic project reviews.
It is desirable that students have already mastered soft skills like collaborative problem solving, negotiation, team building, and public speaking. It is recommended to have mastered all learning coming from the first semester courses in the same Study Course.
Modalità di valutazione
The evaluation will be based on the quality and content of the results achieved during the Design Studio.
In particular, the evaluation will concern: the understanding developed about potential use and application of AI, the coherence between the concept and the promise of AI, the quality of the final project (i.e., communication, technical understanding and development, prototype).
The examination will be held at the conclusion of the Design Studio during which students will present their project to the teachers and, if it is the case, to the company that has provided the design brief.
