The course will be held by Professor Tim Sluckin, from the University of Southampton, UK.

Besides being a leading theoretical scientist in soft matter physics, Tim Sluckin has developed experience in the study of the History of Mathematics and Science. He has published over 170 research papers, which have received over 3000 citations (H index = 32), and 4 books, including "Soap, Science and Flat screen TVs: a history of liquid crystals", Oxford University Press, 2nd ed., 2014. The aim of the course is to develop and improve the candidates' scientific writing, as well as increase their ability to deliver scientific and technical presentations in English.

* Evolution of technical-scientific writing and communication. Historical examples 
* General topics on scientific technical English; clear, concise and unambiguous written communication; English vs American English wording; appropriate transition and connecting words; proper verb tenses 
* International English: pitfalls for native and non-native speakers in reading, writing, speaking and listening 
* Planning a scientific paper 
* Writing a quality paper (language; choice of the title; introduction; acknowledgements; main body; conclusions; bibliographic references; appendices; notes) 
* Result visualization: tables and figures 
* From the initial to the final draft (writing the first draft; reviewing the contents; reviewing the language; preparing the highlights of a paper, dealing with Referees/Supervisor comments and objections, interaction with Editor) 
* Preparing and organizing a PhD Thesis. The bibliographic research. Ethics and plagiarism 
* Refereeing scientific papers 
* Planning an oral presentation: keeping an audience interested in your results 
* Preparing and writing slides 
* Preparing a poster 
* Examples and group-working applications


Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

The course will consist in oral classes, with mandatory exercises of critical reading, writing and presentation.

Learning evaluation includes written exercises during the Course, followed by an oral presentation on an agreed topic.
