Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course aims at cultivating a critical approach to the vision of the creative and innovative processes, bringing forward the social dimension, cultural variables, non-linear character, complexity and ethic consequences, all aspects that good designers must know how to face. The course looks at the basic themes of innovation theory: terminology (radical and incremental innovation, product and process, etc.), ethics (vision of the presentation “Ausmerzen” by Marco Paolini), theory (innovation production and diffusion, innovation models, object, practice and affordances agencies), in addition to a series of reflections on some specific aspects of contemporary technological innovation.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

- students know and understand the dynamics of innovation and in particular that specific form of innovation guided by design;
- students can apply this knowledge critically to read the phenomenon of the development of technical objects and services, exemplary and significant, of the contemporary social-technical context;
- students can, in addition, develop possible innovation strategies, welcoming its systemic aspect, and the levers that can be used to permit its diffusion.

Argomenti trattati

Often the design discourse describes the profession of the designer as a service to human beings, an activity oriented to the creation of better and socially desirable living conditions: the designer innovates to improve. Paradoxically, however, several times people do not want improvements and refuse innovation, because every innovation has a cost in terms of psychophysical energies spent to adapt to it. The affirmation of innovation always depends on social factors. The course "Innovation Theories and Cultures" aims to cultivate a critical approach with respect to the usual vision of creative and innovative processes, highlighting its social dimensions, cultural variables, non-linear character, complexity and ethical implications: a set of aspects that the good designer must know how to deal with.

In the first part of the course, carried out in the form of a lecture, the founding themes of the theory of innovation will be addressed: conceptual aspects (radical and incremental innovation, of product and process, etc.), ethical aspects, theoretical aspects (production and diffusion of innovation, models of innovation, agency of objects, practices and affordances). Active participation of students in the lessons is required.

In the second part of the course, starting from four case studies and theoretical interpretations, some fundamental but often neglected features of the innovation processes will be highlighted. The role of users and social groups of reference, technical artefacts, production processes, etc. will be analyzed. This part of the course will take the form of seminar discussions, in which students will have to introduce and discuss some significant texts with respect to a specific theme ("flipped class" method).

It is however possible to take and pass the exam without attending the lessons (see below, "guarantee exam").


There are no pre-requisites for attendance.

Modalità di valutazione

Guarantee exam:

All students can take the exam in any official exam session of the course. This exam is oral and consists of an interview of about half an hour on the content of the texts listed in bibliography. The exam questions will aim to verify the knowledge acquired by the student and his/her ability to master the topics indicated and to treat them with a critical attitude.

Evaluation of students attending classes:

For students who are actively attending the course, a classroom exercise will be held at the end of the first part. The exercise is written and consists of answering two open questions concerning the topics discussed up to that point. The exercise is evaluated: the evaluation will be expressed in thirtieths and may, at the discretion of the student, contribute to the final grade (in which case there will be a corresponding reduction in the exam questions).

Students taking part in the group work during the second part of the course will receive a special assessment, also expressed in thirtieths, which can, at the discretion of the student, contribute to the final grade.

Consequently, those who obtain positive marks both in the evaluated exercise and in the group work will be exempted from the oral exam.
