Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The aim of the Course is to provide PhD Students with analytical, conceptual and interpretative tools together with research/design methodologies to advance research in the field of urban project, architectural design, and landscape in historical and historicised sites.

Working in pre-existing setting is nowadays the main condition of the project requires a complex understanding of a multi-layered built environment, which at the same time needs to be preserved and modified, i.e. to be case-by-case carefully and appropriately modified to be conserved. Present troublesome approach to tolerance for change, skewed as it is in favour of intangible values and provisional demands, calls for deepening the relationship between knowledge, history and design.

 The goals are related to the formulation of both research plans and integrated strategies for historic/historicised sites:

- gain full awareness and understanding of the complex interaction in history and design between permanencies, existing signs, and transformation;

- develop theoretic design-oriented research;

- gain knowledge and understanding of the principles, techniques and tools for reading, description and interpretation of historic urban contexts, settlement forms and territories;

- gain awareness and understanding of the complementarity between architecture, urban form and landscape and the need of a multiscale approach to research challenges;

- gain skills in research techniques on architecture and urban study from the perspective of urban theories.

- face methodological and theoretical aspects, opening to multidisciplinary approach but in a targeted way.

The course deals with a theoretically-led approach to design-oriented research, aiming at formulating theories and principles for intervention based on knowledge, reading and interpretation and comparative case studies.

The course will discuss theories and case studies pertaining to the realm of: the old and the new, permanence and modification in architecture; the old and the new: permanence and transformation in the city; reading/decoding architecture, city and settlement; design subjects (“themes”), forms and tools.

Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

PhD Students will assume the contents of the lectures as subjects to re-discuss compare and contrast their own researches in form of a scientific paper and with specific graphic elaborations.
