BASIC MISSION & TRAINING GOALS.

Health refers to an individual and collective status, strongly influenced by the environmental context or by local governments’ policies. The connection between morphological and functional features of urban context and Public Health is a crucial and contemporary aspect. Urbanization and cities shaping provide substantial opportunities for Public Health promotion and protection, but can also represent risks factors. Urban Health is not only medical approach related to environmental diseases, but is a social and sustainable approach. Urban Health could be a tool of primary Public Health Prevention and Promotion. For this reason, it’ necessary / important:

  • to identify the strategies to reduce urban risks factors;
  • to design and realize Salutogenic Cities, according to the urbanization phenomenon;
  • to encourage city users’ Healthy Lifestyles;
  • to identify new evaluation tools to address Evidence-Based Healthy Design Strategies for the contemporary European and International cities.

Researchers and practitioners, both of technical and medical education, identified the need of an interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approach, in order to address the main health problems of the city and of contemporary society; there is a need of joint action in order to involve communities starting from the professionals themselves. The PhD Course is aimed to take into account Urban Health and Environmental Sustainability topics since the early stages of urban planning, which could serve as primary prevention and collaboration in promoting health, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to the city construction.
