Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

Aim of the course is to provide the elements to address the technical aspects of the management and treatment of municipal solid waste:

  • Knowledge of the characteristics of waste
  • Knowledge of EU and Italian legislation on waste
  • Setting up of integrated waste management schemes and plans
  • Design of treatment and disposal plants
  • Assessment and control of the environmental impacts of waste treatment plants
  • Evaluation of various treatment alternatives (Life Cycle Assessment - LCA)

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Lectures will allow students to:

* know the characteristics of waste and understand a laboratory report
* understand and apply the proper legislation on waste
* define an integrated waste management plan
* understand and control the environmental impacts of waste management and treatment
* critically assess different options of waste management 

The exercises and the projects will allow students to:

* preliminarily design a waste treatment plant
* write a technical report describing the plant main features
* quantitatively apply LCA to a waste treatment plant

Overall framework: waste production and management in Italy, the EU and in the world
Waste characteristics: waste composition analysis, proximate and elemental analysis, calorific value, biogenic content. Solid Recovered Fuels - SRF
Legislation applicable to waste (Italy and the EU)
Waste prevention
Integrated waste management: 
general concepts, waste management plans, waste collection schemes
Material recycling: overall framework, focus on paper, plastic, glass, aluminium
Mechanical-Biological Treatments (MBT), composting, anaerobic digestion: process concepts, mass and energy balances, impacts on the environment
Thermal treatments through combustion in dedicated plants: process concepts, mass and energy balances, impacts on the environment, assessment of biogenic vs. fossil CO2 emissions
Alternative thermal treatments: gasification and pyrolysis; co-combustion in cement kilns and power plants
Landfill disposal: design and operation, leachate and biogas characteristics and management, legislation, aftercare
Management of some types of special waste: construction & demolition waste, waste electric and electronic equipment
Life Cycle Assessment: European sustainable and consumption policies, overall framework, methodological issues, application to waste management and treatment

The course includes a series of exercises on the main topics of the teaching program. 

A field visit to one or more treatment plants is part of the program, together with one or more seminars held by external professionals.


Prerequisiti

Basic knowledge of Chemistry is a prerequisite.


Modalità di valutazione

The final exam consists of an oral test on the whole program and on the evaluation of the practical activities proposed during the course (projects, presentations,...) 

The final mark is based on the outcome of the oral exam and of the practical activities.
