The scenario - the task
The 2019-2020 Final studio proposes to address a urban rehabilitation/regeneration approach quite common in all former socialist countries that adopted the State Planning System – as for instance the Soviet Five year Plan.
After 1992, the adoption of Liberalism in such countries with the consequent entry in global and free market competition provoked strong territorial imbalances, migration from weak regions to few big cities, with consequent phenomena of economical decay of entire regions and cities and uncontrolled growth of metropolitan areas.
Common phenomena in such countries are city shrinkage, building collapse because of physical decay of heavy prefabrication system building, abandoning of industrial zones, dismantling of facilities and transportation networks as railways, environment neglect and a strong push toward new developments.
In a perspective of sustainable re-development of such settlement the students will be ask to develop a planning and design approach that relies on some urban and architectural prototypes – from housing, to facilities, to transportation hubs, green areas - for the reuse of existing territorial and urban structures inherited by Socialist Planning System.
The design process will be organised in phases both referring to urban planning scale as well as architectural scale.
In a first phase, issues related to the territorial/urban scale will be investigated in the teaching unit of prof. Giuseppe Cinà “Urban design”. These issues will concern the following topics: urban and rural land use, settlements’ morphology, balance among the central functions, analysis of the state of building heritage, preservation of historic values in a frame of sustainable development.
In a second phase, on the base of the territorial and local planning units identified in the first phase, will be conducted an evaluation of a set of possible re-design proposal and the elaboration of detailed pilot projects will be conducted.
Issues related to this design task at architectural and urban scale will be investigated in the teaching of prof. Chen Zhen “Architecture and urban design”.
The design activity will be organised in groups of at least 3 members.
Materials and sources
Cartography and maps on cases study will be provided during the Studio activity.
Lectures will illustrate the characters both at urban as well at architectural scale of such context and sample experience of re-development of and reuse of existing territorial and urban structures inherited by Socialist Planning System, touching theoretical and design methodology issues as well.
Bibliographic references will be given during studio activity.
