Depopulation and marginalisation of inner areas is an increasing phenomenon across Europe, which is predicted to become the new normal in many peripheral rural regions over the coming decades. A managed transition to an economic base consistent with the realities of lower population levels requires new ways of thinking about development which re-envisions shrinkage not as a burden, but as a potential positive opportunity. In fact, this can help to reorient policies and investment decisions to re-grow greener, smaller and provide new openings to be innovative, modernise governance and public services through more holistic, proactive and place-based strategies.
The course has the aim of investigating possible architectural and urban strategies tackling with shrinking issues of a traditional village centre in a Mediterranean island. The design activity developed during the course will focus on a portion of the historical built environment exploring possible renovation scenarios as well as the transformation process (stakeholders involved, phases, strategies, etc.). This requires the typological and technological upgrading of the existing construction to respond to the new demands and to host a new possible program within a general intervention policy. The topic of the balance between conservation and enhancement to improve the resilience of the place, as a distinctive feature of this design challenge requires a cultural rethinking also including environmental, social and economic sustainability goal.
Modalità di valutazione
Student’s evaluation will be based on both individual and group work. During the semester different didactical tools and experiences will be experimented, ranging from extempore to traditional tutoring and intermediate critiques.
In particular, final assessment will consist in a presentation and discussion of the activities performed in the program. Deliverables will consist in a research booklet, project panels and models.
The evaluation will be carried out taking into account the quality of the project developed and the ability of the student to present it with reference to the topics and themes dealt with in the Studio. The final evaluation will be determined by the contents of the project, by the candidates' presentation and by the student's work during the course.
