Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The approach to Design Thinking was described as the ability of designers to face complex problems and reformulate them through the identification of emerging themes. To better understand the main characteristics of this “re-contextualisation process”, the teaching will have a historical position, which describes how design and its methods have changed according to the changes made in social-technical paradigms. Four paradigms will be presented: industrial economy, Economy experience, knowledge economy and transformation economy. Even if the paradigms are immersed in a specific moment in time, they still exist today. For each paradigm there is a series of important questions for design: mass production, user-centred design, product language, involving production, new craftsmanship, social innovation to mention a few. The description of each paradigm is the occasion for delving further into these problems, framing them in the historical perspective.

Students:
- applying knowledge and understanding: will learn to recognise and understand complex problems and reformulate them through the identification of emerging themes;
- making judgements: can operate a reasoned summary of complex themes. When applied to the project, this means developing the ability to integrate cultural, symbolic and expressive factors with those that are functional, technical, constructive, also considering environmental and system factors;
- learning skills: will develop their learing skills to continue studying and investigating the themes that interest them autonomously.


Argomenti trattati

The Design Thinking approach has been described as the capacity of designers to face complex problems, reframing them through the identification of emerging themes.

In order to better understand which are the main features of such “reframing process”, the course will take an historical stance, describing how the practice of design and its methods have changed according to the changes in the socio-technical paradigms. To this end, four perspectives in product design will be presented: Technical, Human, Digital and Social. Even if each perspective has emerged in a specific moment in time, all of them are co-existing nowadays.

Under each perspective, a number of issues relevant to the design discipline have emerged: mass-production, user-centred design, product experience, addictive manufacturing, social innovation, just to mention a few. During the course, the description of each perspective will give the opportunity to deepen those issues, framing them in the right socio-technical paradigm.  

The course is made up of ex-cathedra lectures. On each perspective, an external speaker will be invited. Moreover, students - organized into groups - will be assigned a specific issue among those introduced, and will be asked to deepen it. The results of such study will be presented to the whole class. 

At the end of the course, students will have to answer an open-question questionnaire covering the main addressed topics.

Modalità di valutazione

Students will be evaluated both on the basis of the results of the end-course questionnaire and of their in-class presentation.
