Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course is aimed at developing a full understanding on the mechanical behavior of structural metallic alloys and on their main failure mechanisms. 


Risultati di apprendimento attesi

After attending the course and final examination, the students will:

  1. possess the knowledge of the main tools used for the basic design and assessment of machine components subjected to static and fatigue loading.
  2. improve the skills necessary for practical design application.
  3. know the fundamental mechanisms of failure of metals under different service conditions; 
  4. know the different methods to perform non-destructive tests on structural parts;
  5. be able to apply the above knowledge for the evaluation of expected damage to be found in structural metallic parts as a function of manufacturing routes and service conditions;
  6. be able to select the best method (or combination of methods) for the non-destructive detection of defects in structural parts. 
  7. have the capability to approach the solution of a problem and critically discuss the results.
  8. improve the capability on writing a technical report.

Prerequisiti

For the module of Mechanical behavior of metals, the courses assumes that the students already possess the basic knowledge of Mechanics of Structures and Basic Machine Design, including kinematic analysis and solutions of beams, De Saint-Venant cases, 2D stress and strains analysis, failure theories and assessment under static loading.

For the module on Failure and control of metals, a good background on physical metallurgy is required. Background in manufacturing processes of metals and in solid mechanics are are preferable.


Modalità di valutazione

the integrated course of "Mechanical Behaviour and Failure of Metals" is made up of the two modules of "Mechanical Behaviour of Metals" and of "Failure and control of Metals".

 The module of “Mechanical Behaviour of Metals” is based on a compulsory written test  with a maximum score of 27. An optional homework is evaluated with a maximum score of 3. The oral is on request with a maximum score of 2 

 The module "Failure and control of Metals" consists of a written test only. Due to large number of students attending the course and the need to provide a fairly rapid evaluation of the tests, there will be a first part of the test consisting in a set of multiple-choice questions. Only those students scoring more than 18/30 in the first part will be evaluated for the second part of the test. The second part will consist in a short number of open questions (typically 3 or 4 questions) where the student will be asked to summarized the main concepts learnt about selected general topics.

 The proposed mark of the module will be the weighted average of the evaluation of part I and part II, namely: (PI + 2*PII)/3. The final mark of the integrated course will be registered as the average of the two modules once both are passed. The evaluation of each single module will expire at end of the exam sessions of the running academic year.
