Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The goal of Design Methods is to provide the knowledge and the application skill of the methods related to the design of industrial products.

The principles that enable the study and development of innovative building solutions will be explained during the lessons and the methods able to achieve that goal will be proposed and applied during the exercitation time.

Specifically, the course will cover the study of the models and of the design tools suited to address both the development of new products and the improvement of existing ones.

The proposed systematic design concepts will be applied to concrete cases that will be developed by students.

The lessons and the exercises will allow the students to:

Knowledge and understanding

the methods adoptable to detect the functionality of an industrial product;

the techniques able to analyse and subdivide a product into its sub-assemblies and parts, organising them on the base of their functions;

the approaches for the systematic designing of a new product or for the improvement of an existing one;

the techniques for gathering information on technical systems able to satisfy specific functions;

the rules for develop embodiment solutions of industrial product according to a specific X target (Design for X).

Applying Knowledge and understanding

to the analysis of the operating functions of an industrial product;

to the subdivision of a product in groups of organs able to perform a specific function;

to the search of technical systems and solutions able to satisfy defined requirements;

to the comparison of different technical systems by means of evaluation methods and tools, in order to select the best solution for the problem posed;

to the definition of the embodiment of a product or of one its sub-assembly.

Making Judgements and Learning skills

to choose among different designing solutions the better one, basing on objective criteria.


to communicate and to discuss the results of the design developed.

Argomenti trattati

Introduction: The design of the industrial products, its historic context and its evolution; the logic steps used to describe the design process and their connection with the life cycle of a product.

Theory of technical systems: principles and methods of the design science (axiomatic design, heuristic design, systematic design, etc.); schematic and pratical models adopted for the analysis, for the simulations and for the development of industrial products; physical principles of operation of machines and industrial products; pratical use of the archives of constructive solutions for gathering information. Knowledge management. 

Design for X: Designing based on the properties arising from the phases of the product life cycle (production, assembly, installation, performance, ergonomics, maintenance, reliability, quality, cost, environmental sustainability, etc); Criteria for the choice of optimal constructive solution.


To follow the teaching profitably, the student must have acquired the notions of the physical phenomenon operating in the machines and their impact on the products embodiment; the knowledge about the mainly technologies adopted for the manufacturing of the industrial parts, also relating to the materials used, and about the main mechanisms and standard parts adopted in the industrial products architecture, also with respect to their assembling.

Modalità di valutazione

Course structure

The schedule on Design Methods proposes lectures and exercises dedicated to the application of the concepts presented.

Periodically, on turn, the students will be called to communicate and to discuss, with the class, results about some design problems that will be weekly proposed, under the exercise form.

Course attendance is warmly suggested.

Assessement criteria

On a voluntary basis, the students, grouped in teams, will be called to solve a design problem related to the develop of a new product or the improvement of an existing one. The problem proposed have to be faced by means of the methods and the techniques learned. The team is called to develop a report that includes information about the road followed for the solution and the result obtained. To the team will be requested to communicate own work and result during an oral presentation. The final grade will be proposed on the base both of the written report and the oral presentation.

The design project intends to check if the students have got the abilities:

to detect the functionality of an industrial product and of its sub-assemblies;

to apply systematic methods to solve a design problem;

to collect the information required to develop a design solution;

to arrange an abstract solution into an embodiment design for a product;

to select, also in critical manner, the more useful method to face the problem posed;

to communicate own result in synthetic manner.

The students that do not attend or do not participate to the design project will be evaluated on the basis of a written test followed by an oral discussion. This test will be focused on a specific and confined design problem.

By means of these test and discussion you intend to validate the abilities acquired by the student:

to analyse by means a systematic approach the problem posed and identify the main functionalities of the system proposed;

to arrange and to collect the information required to solve the problem by means of one of the methods learned;

to apply an evaluation criteria able to select the best solution between those discovered;

to describe the embodiment architecture of the final solution;

to communicate in synthetic manner the result obtained.
