099266 - PAYLOAD DESIGN
The aim of the course is to provide the competences needed to perform the preliminary design of a payload instrument for a space mission, starting from given mission objectives and requirements.

Lectures and exercise sessions will allow students to:
Analyze and understand the scientific objectives and assumptions associated to a space payload instrument
Derive a complete set of design requirements for a space payload instrument
Define the architecture of space payload instrument
Identify and define the design activities for preliminary design of space payload instruments
The design laboratory sessions will allow students to:
Write a requirement specification document
Write a mission description document
Perform the preliminary design of a space payload instrument
Summarize and present the results achieved during the design activities
Improve their communication skills
The course is divided in two modules which target complementary aspect of the payload design.
Payload Design A will focus on the requirements derivation and on the design process.
Payload Design B will focus on the technological design, mainly mechanical, thermal and electronical.
Students are required to know fundamental concepts of orbital mechanics, structural analysis and thermal analysis as provided by the courses of Obital Mechanics, Spacraft Structures and Heat Transfer and Thermal Analysis.
Modalità di valutazione
Students will be asked to form small groups to which a design project is assigned and partly developed during the design laboratory sessions. Each group will be required to prepare a common report and give a presentation of the design project activity. Finally each students will undergo an individual oral exam on the topic of the classroom lessons.
The report and the group presentation will be required for admission to the individual oral exam. The examinatron is considered successfull if in the individual oral exam the student shows sufficient knowledge and understanding of the topics covered in the lessons.
