Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

In the course, the design of complex systems with reference to ground vehicles is addressed from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Multi-objective optimisation and Robust Design methods are introduced.

The methods are applied to optimise designs mostly related to ground vehicles.

The optimal design of structural elements, the concept design of vehicles, the vehicle suspension design, the integration of electronically controlled systems will be discussed.

 

 

 


Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Lectures will allow the students to

- define the design requirements

- correctly fomulate an optimisation problem, in both single and multi-objective frameworks 

- select the most effective numerical procedures for solving a given optimisation problem

- analyse the results and select a final design solution.

 

The projects will allow the students to

- optimally design vehicles subsystems 

- summarize and present the results

 

 


Argomenti trattati

Introduction. The role of optimization in the design of mechanical and mechatronic complex systems.

Problem formulation. Design variables, objective functions, design constraints.

Optimizing a single objective and multi-objective. Optimality conditions, Pareto optimality, K-optimality. Scalarisation methods.

Optimization methods. Basics concepts (quasi-monte carlo method, quasi-Newton methods, penalty methods, ....). Optimization with discrete variables, evolutionary algorithms (genetic algorithms, ...). Design of Computer Experiments and global approximation methods (response surface, neural networks, ...). Sensitivity analysis. Robust Design and "reliability-based" multi-objective optimization.


 Case studies

 - Frames and structural elements. Structural and topology optimization. Topology optimisation of road vehicles suspension components. 

-  Vehicles Suspension systems. Selection of the stiffness and damping. Definition of the gains of actively suspended vehicles.

-  Handling optimisation of road vehicles. Tires and suspension geometry selection.

-  Concept design of vehicles. Defining the optimal layout of a road vehicle.

-  Integration of active control systems.

 


Prerequisiti

Suggested prerequisites

- basic knowledge of Matlab (or Octave, FreeMat, Scilab,...) 

- machine design course

- vehicle design and/or vehicle dynamics course

 

 


Modalità di valutazione

Oral exam

- theoretical questions on the course topics (Knowledge and understanding)

- simple design problems solution (Applying knowledge and understanding).

 

Laboratory Report

- selection of correct the solution procedures (Making Judgements, Learning skills)

- discussion of the results  (Making Judgements, Learning skills)

- report presentation (Communication).
