Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

This course will cover basic technical communication skills covering both written and oral communication of technical work. The ability to convey your technical skills and work to both a technical and non-technical audience is essential for any career. This course will give the opportunity to gain more experience in communicating their technical work in a variety of forms. Particular emphasis is placed on promoting your work to a non-technical audience and in communicating the wider implications of your technical work in order to attract investment and interest from business. The course consists of a lecture series, a group presentation and a group proposal describing a technical idea and its potential impact.

Argomenti trattati

The course will follow a lecture course accompanied by group exercises.

 

The course will cover:

1. Scientific and technical writing - structure, techniques, rules, hints and tips.

2. How to write a business proposal for funding of a technical project.

3. Impact writing - selling your work.

4. Oral presentations.

 

The students will work in groups of 6-8 to prepare a written and oral presentation in English on a technical idea with the aim of gaining funding.


Prerequisiti

No prerequisites are required.


Modalità di valutazione

The mode of assessment will be through a group project (8 students) that will aim to gain external funding for their technical innovation or research idea. It will be required to:

(i) Perform a group presentation in English with each individual presenting a part of the presentation (approximately 2-3 minutes each).

(ii) A group proposal supporting the research idea.

 

The oral presentations will take place within the dedicated lecture times and feedback will be given on each presentation. Feedback will be given on the written proposal highlighting the strengths and weaknesses.
