Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The goal of Innovation in Metallurgical plants and processes is to enable students to achieve a deep comprehension about the metallurgical processes and plants aimed at the production of metals (non-ferrous). The main plastic deformation processes were discussed and some theoretical tools to design the process will be provided. Furthermore, all the innovation aimed at reducing energy consumption, cost and environmental impact will be introduced. A part of this course is dedicated to the explaination about the type of innovations with pratical application in the metallurgical field.


Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Once the student has passed the exam, the student will:

a) Know and understand of the main metallurgical processes (production and transformation of engineering alloys).

b) be able to analyze and understand the production and transformation plants of the main metals.

c) be able to understand and describe the main innovation in these processes

Furthermore, the student will be able to present a report (written and oral presentation) containing the state of the art of a process and related plant, the main innovation found in literature, a critical discussion, conclusions and recommendations. (Making Judgements and communication skills).

 

 


Argomenti trattati

Topic 1: Production plant for ferrous and non –ferrous alloys for advanced uses (aerospace, electronics and transport).

Topic 2: Metals and alloys solidification: continuous casting of steel and aluminum, casting innovative process, thyxoforming.

Topic 3: Metallurgical aspects of plastic deformation (hot and cold). Deformation maps and forming limit diagrams.

Topic 4: Innovation in coatings: processes and new nanostructured material.

Topic 5: Single crystal: mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, heat resistance and production techniques.

Topic 6: Environmental impact assessment criterions.

At the beginning of the course a seminar about the use of the electronic resources of Polimi library system.

The course will offer lectures and seminars, held by experts on some specific topics (different year by year).

Course attendance is suggested.

 


Prerequisiti

Who is going to attend the course is expected to have rooted bases in Chemistry and Applied metallurgy.


Modalità di valutazione

Students’ skills and knowledge will be evaluated by an oral exam, or by a short project, the latter chosen on a voluntary basis.

The oral exam, or the presentation of the short project, will verify if the students have got the knowledge and understanding. Moreover, the exam (or project) will verify the knowledge and understanding abilities to present the main metals production and transformation plant (and processes) and discuss about the main innovation.

The short project consists of a brief essay on one metallurgical process and its innovation. The knowledge of the process and the understanding abilities will be verified. The project might be realized in team and a final oral presentation is required. Soft skills in writing report, oral presentation and work group are enhanced and improved.

An additional oral examination could be required by the student to improve the obtained mark with the project.
