Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course supplies a general overview of the technologies that are useful for realising products, services and interactive environments that use electronic and network technologies; it also imparts skills that are useful for creating innovative scenarios from a functional standpoint, and interaction paradigms, with special attention given to understanding the main factors that determine the true feasibility of realisation. The course also proposes concept instruments for analysing important case studies, and introduces notions that are useful for producing prototypes and demonstrations. The course includes two modules that integrate the technical and the project standpoints: 'Design driven innovation' and 'IT languages and systems'.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

- will have skills on man-machine interaction paradigms and the different forms of involvement of the product and digital service users (learning skills);
- will have skills on the main instruments for prototyping physical and digital interactive systems (applying knowledge and understanding);
- will obtain skills on the prefiguration of innovative scenarios of interaction with particular attention on feasibility (making judgements);
- will obtain skills related to the design and realisation of functional prototypes of interactive systems (applying knowledge and understanding);
- will be autonomously able to evaluate and analyse important case studies and evaluate the feasibility of the pre-set scenarios (making judgements);
- will have the theory and concept instruments needed to independently learn interactive system prototyping languages and techniques.

Learning outcomes

The course deals with the basics of hardware and software for Interaction Design.

At the end of the course, students are expected to master the development of an interactive artefact/prototype from both hardware and software sides, choosing the most viable and efficient solutions, considering design as well as technical constraints.


Course contents

The course will explore the basics of hardware and software for IxD moving from a hardware hacking approach: by disassembling, hacking and re-assembling an industrial product, students will be guided to envision new behaviours and interaction mechanics as well as to master the most common microcontrollers, sensors, actuators.

The main hardware architectures proposed will be centred on programmable microcontrollers interacting with sensors, actuators and other ICs. The programming concepts essential to implement interactions and IoT connectivity will be provided.


Teaching methods

Structured as a mix of lectures and hands-on activities, the course strongly relies on a learning-by-doing approach, helping students to directly apply and test the acquired knowledge step-by-step. Part of the course will employ a blended learning approach, providing students with tools for self-learning.


There are no pre-requisites for attendance.

Modalità di valutazione

The assessment will be based on a mix of evaluations deriving from:

- the realization and discussion of an interactive prototype (group activity)

- a written test (personal activity)

- proactivity and lesson attendance.
