The laboratory will enlarge upon questions on the identification of specific project intervention areas, content organisation and the relative transposition on different communication supports in an analogue and digital sphere: the potentials offered and the restrictions set by technology will be analysed; students will be supplied with methodological and technical instruments for effectively facing the analysis, design and evaluation of the various aspects of the design of complex communicative artefacts

Students will: - know and understand the instruments and methods for designing a communicative artefacts system; - be able to apply the methodological and technical skills learnt during the project development phases; - independently and in a group develop and interpret perceptive mechanisms and chromatic systems, sharing and communicating the project choices made, developing attitude for negotiation, team building, leadership and conflict handling.
Interactive Transmedia Narrative for New Media
Course Description & Learning Outcomes
The contemporary widespread use of digital and interactive videos, games, images and memes, audio and text, and their distribution across media leads to new consumption behaviours that feed the experimentation of new interactive narrative forms. Thus, storytelling practices represent both a spontaneous way for producing and sharing content and an issue to further explore within the design field.
On the light of this reasoning, nowadays more than ever, narratives emerge as complex and articulated subjects of research and experimentation, rooted in different epistemologies and investigated by various disciplines. The very nature of these narratives makes them inclusive of the different degrees of complexity that characterize the design processes, and therefore, from a design education perspective, an ideal context for exploring the phases and challenges of conceiving such artefacts.
In particular, this course investigates how to conceptualise and design interactive narratives for analog and digital media, as well as hybrid solutions. The investigation includes the analysis of storytelling structures for writing concepts and content for interactive experiences, ranging from a personal to a community size. From a design perspective, we will tackle issues related to:
the role of narratives within communication systems (story, storyworld, character, user engagement);
strategies for building and taking advantage of narratives as means for conveying values and meanings (style/genre, values, ethics of aesthetics)
the implication of building narratives for a specific medium, namely the affordances as opportunities for action that each medium implies
The design exercise is also discussed by the viewing and analysis of audiovisual work from movies and TV series to games. Knowledge achieved is directly applied into exercises.
The course is mainly positioned in the communication domain, and analyses interactive narrative from the perspective of design, offering a methodology and a set of tools to help designers in training to conceive and produce interactive narrative projects. From distributed narratives to narrative games, interactive narrative projects are challenging the communication ecosystem introducing further degrees of complexity.
Course Format and Learning Modes
The course is composed of lecture sessions – devoted to lectures, discussion and critique –, and design studio sessions – spent on working on the assignments and design exercises. Learning modes consist of articles reading, lecture presentations, seminars, discussions, existing work analysis, own design exercise, own work presentations, demos and their review.
Specific Learning Outcomes
Gain basic knowledge of interactive narrative, fundamentals, its concepts, vocabulary and production as applied in media
Become able to unpack arguments into assumptions,recognize the functions served by narrative entities and tools, and apply them in the process of designing interactive narratives
Learn to examine case studies, evaluating the role of interactive narratives in communicating values
Understand how to design interactive narratives across media
Identify the implications of audience engagement within interactive narratives and apply them to their working demo
teamwork and communication skills
