Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

This course aims to stimulate thought about the relationship between design and construction as the origin of expressive and poetic quality of an internal space, where the role of detail and matter can arise. The course is structured with lessons and optional graphic exercises in which the themes of the lessons from a design implication standpoint will be developed. The educational objectives of the course aim to impart not only knowledge but also judgement autonomy in design choice awareness and an ability to learn in the detailed cultural study of the subjects dealt with.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Students:
- know and understand the relationship between designed and built and the role of technology, the study of detail and a correct choice of materials as a necessary instrument for a high quality design
- know how to take advantage of the expressive quality of a material or a detail in the design process.
- develop judgement independence while aware of the design choices and understand the detailed cultural study of the subjects dealt with.

Argomenti trattati

The integrated course ATELIER FOR TECHNOLOGIES has the aim of exploring the relationship between design and construction as the matrix of the expressive and poetic quality of interiors, unfolding the role of matter and detail.

The course consists of the two subjects of Culture of Design Technology and Practice of Design Technology.

The first program investigates the delicate transition between spaces ideation and execution in terms of choice of technologies, materials and surfaces. It originates from the need to study, more in depth, the relationship between the creative phase of a project and its definition through specific physical and sensual qualities of the spaces.

The skill of an interior designer is precisely to introduce new sensorial contexts and to choose the most suitable materials and technologies in so to create a certain atmosphere and, in the best case, new perceptual scenarios.

Simultaneously, the subject of Practice of Design Technology focuses on architectural details and detailing, with the aim of transferring to the students, among the many variables conditioning this activity, the expressive and figurative viewpoint. Accordingly, selected case studies are disclosed and compared as well as the position of outstanding contemporary scholars, highlighting, with a diachronic perspective, the principles of construction, the rules of composition and assembly as a construction grammar from design to building.

This course aims to activate autonomous processes for understanding materials, surfaces as well as assembly systems and to expand the possible repertoire of solutions to consider while designing, being well aware though that the ultimate reason for these choices is always due to one’s individual experience and "one’s ability to perceive the world with both emotions and reason" (P. Zumthor).

The course consists of lectures and optional graphic coursework developing the lectures’ topics.

The educational goals of the course are not only to provide knowledge and understanding of the topics but also to enhance the capability of the students to make aware and informed design choices (making judgements) and to improve their learning skills enlarging their interests towards the in depth analysis of the course themes.

In the section Bibliography a selection of books on the lectures’ topic are listed, but further specific publications will be provided at the beginning of the course.

Prerequisiti

There are no pre-requisites for attendance.

Modalità di valutazione

The final evaluation consists of a written test concerning the lecture topics (for attending students) or the bibliography (for non attending students) and on the evaluation of the optional coursework developed during the semester.
