The aim of the course is to give the class the basic knowledge of design methodologies, the history of design methods and the tools and methods used within the design practice today. Therefore, the students learn about Design Studies, Design Methods starting from the early researches on how creative minds work (Peirce, Alexander, Asimow, Gregory, Archer, Simon, Schön) up to “thinking aloud” protocols (Lawson, Rowe) and finally the recent design thinking phenomenon.
More in detail by the end of the course, students will be able to:
_understand the design research process and strategy;
_use different approaches to gather information from the environment;
_apply different techniques to gain a meaningful insight on different situations and contexts;
_use service design tools to explain the design process and output;
_draw scenarios as the backbone to project development and idea generation;
_apply creativity techniques to scenario based design innovation.
The course is articulated in lectures and exercises. Each practical activity will be introduced through frontal lecturing and case studies. The practical activity will be based on: team work, project work, open discussions and creativity sessions.
Students will have the possibility to get to know different design research techniques used in professional design firms and by experimenting these research tools they will also develop new ways to visualize the results and process of the research.
This course guides the students towards becoming aware of the importance of knowing how to elaborate a design research, defining both the process and the methods, in order to allow clients to understand the entire design process behind the final solution.
The students will also understand how to work in multi-cultural teams and will understand the difficulties and challenges of team building and team leadership. The aim of the course is to help students interact and achieve the abilities to become effective project leaders and project managers.
