Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

This architectural design studio gathers terms, as complex architecture and restoration, like concepts and tools to act architectural design in material reality of built architecture and urban fabric.

Teaching aims to consolidate disciplinary knowledge and theoretical references, to nourish critical attitudes, to produce conscious architectural design choices.  That approach allows dealing with complex architecture renovation and restoration design, with awareness of its cultural, material, formal, functional, structural, technological components.

Architectural design passes through a careful interpretation of the design brief applied to chosen site, pinpointing design references framed by their own relationship.

In general terms architectural design develops itself through all suitable techniques by various tasks and stages, pursuing its essential peculiarity at same time of the general layout. In this way each established concept of architecture becomes objective and the final design proposal can ultimately be built on thanks to its representation.

The complexity of architectural design process is managed in this studio through the interplay of Architectural design, Restoration, Structural design, Building services design, Materials for preservation, Technology and design in BIM environment. In order to achieve this purpose, tight and continuous coordination is essential to run the multiplicity of duties that contribute to a design process, paying any consideration needed to fulfill the whole/final construction design. 

Knowledge and experiences will allow the conclusion of the Master’s training program up to the final exam and, subsequently, to the elaboration of the degree thesis.

Lectures, project reviews, workshops, and seminars will allow students to acquire the knowledge and skills appropriate to the conclusion of the Master's course of study and to the conscious elaboration of the degree thesis:

-the attitude to consider architecture as a form of knowledge, as critical thinking, as a tool for understanding reality in the perspective of its virtuous and ethical transformation.

-the ability to learn and elaborate the multidisciplinary skills of the compositional, constructive, structural, and

service- systems components.

-the ability to apply knowledge and understanding to issues and contexts of high complexity, responsibly facing and managing the design process at different scales and in all phases, from the conceptual moment to the executive one.

-the individual capacity of making judgments using multiple criteria in the evaluation of design decisions providing a range of benefits, social values and sustainable costs.

-the ability of communication using, in all areas of confrontation and discussion, the most effective verbal and drawing means.


Argomenti trattati

The principal aim of this Architectural Design Studio and related modules is the transformation of the built environment through a Developed Architectural Design with Technical Design.

The Architectural Design and Composition teaching leads and coordinates the students project to be developed during the whole academic year until the master of science degree project.

The Architectural Design Studio is focused about contemporary city transformation; specifically on 1945-1970 European architectural heritage, intended as buildings and related open spaces. The subject is city fabric renovation, meant as building restoration and extension rather than addition. The design subject is the “Società Umanitaria” architectural complex, a site in Milan historical city fabric, which is itself a long-term urban architecture transformation: starting from a monastery of the XIVth century, through the construction of the urban block in the nineteenth century, finally the post-war reconstruction designed by Ignazio Gardella and Giovanni Romano, since as it is nowadays.

The Restoration and Materials for Preservation module aims to develop in the Architectural Design Studio the Architectural Conservation Design regarding the parts of the buildings that should be conserved for their heritage or functional values enclosed in the Architectural Design Studio Project.

Restoration teaching begins with the architectural and physical survey of the site that represents the ground to study the existing architecture and to consider through the architectural design its transformations. The scientific knowledge of the site must include the consultation of archival documents in direct comparison with the buildings of the “Società Umanitaria”.

Materials for Preservation teaching will illustrate the properties and durability of construction materials used in the second half of XXth century but also traditional building materials. It will illustrate the method for a thorough survey of materials and deterioration forms, based on international standards, starting from geometrical survey and going towards the assessment and mapping of conservation state.

The Technology and design in BIM environment module aims to develop in the Architectural Design Studio the students’ knowledge on the practices of the building technological design through these issues: the qualitative regulation; the performance design; the definition of classes of technical elements; the link between environmental conditions and technological performances; the link between the performance program and the construction systems.

It will be presented the Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach and methodology. It will be discussed the evolution and state-of-the-art of its use in the field of culture heritage and the application of BIM technologies on the survey and on the representation of the architecture.

The Structural Design module aims to develop in the Architectural Design Studio the students’ understanding of basic structural phenomena and technical implications of their project. Specifically: understanding how the existing structures were conceived and actually work; set a correct structural strategy for the transformation design, being it a local intervention on the old buildings or new buildings added or integrated, lastly prepare final design documents (drawings, texts) that explain the student’s Structural Design as a fundamental part of the total Architectural Design.

The Building Services Design module aims to develop in the Architectural Design Studio the knowledge and application of design methods relating to technological systems serving the building system. In particular will be developed the topics applied to the projects in the architectural development phase for the integration of the technological systems used in architecture. The method aims to make typological choices arriving at a plant pre-sizing and, guaranteeing a dialogue on a par with the figures that contribute to the definition of the integrated project.

The above Bibliography lists for each discipline the basic books concurrent in the architectural design interplay. Their deep understanding is required as essential knowledge to allow the better awareness of design tasks to be faced in the Architectural Design Studio. Further texts would be assigned during the development of the lab to deepen each subject, rather than focusing references identified developing projects.


Prerequisiti

Bachelor’s Degree in the classes required for the admission to the Master Degree.


Modalità di valutazione

Learning activity foresee the technical elaboration of the project in all its aspects developed in the Architectural Design Studio teachings. Application and coordination of the various subjects is taught as it is in the architectural design process that aim at the construction.
Students’ design labour should be carried out in teams of 2 people, progressing through a continuous dialogue with the teaching board along the duration of the whole academic year. The Architectural Design Studio foresees the periodic check of the advancement of the work of the single design team during the class hours trought of four intermediate project evaluations during the whole year, two each semester and one ultimate submission of the final workshop.

The exam consists in the final architectural design assessment that will be done jointly with all the aspects applied in the design interplay, together with the assessment of the theoretical contents of the course topics, as applied in the final project. Single teaching evaluation is independent and will be weighted on the proportional base of the corresponding CFU in order to assign to each student a comprehensive global result as final mark.
