Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The goal of teaching is to provide the student with a critical awareness of the main themes of contemporary architectural research, with particular attention to the theoretical, critical and methodological issues of the architectural design.

Design, from the idea to the construction, as a synthesis of multiple bits of knowledge, cannot disregard its theoretical foundations that are necessary to make clear the intentionality of its proposals.

Moving from the tradition of disciplinary knowledge, the course deals with themes and forms of architectural theory, proposing comparisons between the most significant contemporary theoretical positions, by deepening concepts, paradigms, tools. Coherently with the objectives of the Study Course, the teaching assumes as background the relation between architecture and the city, whose discussion has characterized the Italian theoretical tradition and is today of utmost importance in the context of the modifications of contemporary settlements.

- acquire knowledge and understanding of the theories of architectural design, architectural and urban composition, and contemporary architectural research;

- are capable of analysing and interpreting urban morphologies and those of architectural typologies.


Argomenti trattati

One of the central issues of contemporary architectural debates is the question of architecture/nature relation. The question has been frequently epitomised with the term "Green City", that today is  inextricably linked to the idea of ​​bio-architecture, to an extreme, and resilience and sustainability  to climate change, at the other extreme.

 "Green City", is also the title of an architectural competition of 1929 for the construction of a Resort City near Moscow that produced four projects by masters of Russian avant-garde. The competition was asking the design of a new settlement, located in woodlands and rural areas,  complete in all its part – from accessibility network to an abacus of innovative building types – devoted to provide collective rest for a Moscow population (at that time 1 million inhabitants). Nevertheless, with a different emphasis, between the lines each of the four projects intended to show the image of a possible new form of settlement able to solve the contradiction city/countryside.

The course aims to follow the path traced  by that “vision”  by treating  a series of cases of projects for a new form of settlement alternative to the “City”,  as we intend it in a common sense, during the XX century. Of this path will be treated - more than the historical reconstruction-  the conceptual and theoretical frame supporting the different proposals.

The lectures will be organised in 3 units, following a chronological line:

 

1. AGRO-CITIES AND ITS ARCHITECTURE IN THE CULTURE OF MODERN MOVEMENT IN 1920-1940S

Agrarian constructivism, urbanism and de-urbanism in URSS in 1920-1930s;  Le Corbusier “Radius Farm ”; Land reclamation in Italy and USA and the design of new settlement forms.

 

2. THE AFTER-WAR RECONSTRUCTION AND THE ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH FOR NEW FORMS OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT

Italian “Neorealism” and the reconstruction of devastated countryside;  New towns in reclaimed sea in Dutch Polders; The cities of the “unité d’habitation”; The question of vernacular as nature based architecture

 

3. UTOPIAS IN THE 1960-1980’s BETWEEN SOCIALIST AND LIBERALIST WORLDS

“New Settlement Element” project of Soviet group NER;  Andrja Mutnjakovic’s “Biourbanism”;  Paolo Soleri’s “Arcologies”.

 

During the course, as SOFT SKILL (1 ECTS) of 10 hours, will be devoted to teach to the students how to write a short essay in a scientific form based on the key-words emerged during the illustration of cases study in the lectures.

Specific bibliography will be given per any case study. We report in the bibliography window just one text, richly illustrated,  as a first introduction to the topic


Prerequisiti

No prerequisites are required.


Modalità di valutazione

Both for students attending or not attending the course will be evaluated the short essay written by students (1800 word + sheets on literature and notes). The exams consist in a public presentation in a Symposium with the students partecipating to the course lasting 10 minutes + 5 minutes for questions  (standard time in international conferences).
