Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Studio proposes an experience in architectural design facing the proper complexity of the process. Contextual, typological, functional, constructive, expressive and formal issues of the architectural design process will be treated in their mutual relationship and interaction. The design is challenged to critically appreciate ongoing transformations in real contexts and propose appropriate solutions. To achieve this goal students are guided: in a first phase, in the comprehension of the context of the project, in the evaluation of the alternative approaches proposed for the case study area in public debates, and in the appreciation of the relations between buildings and urban structure; in a second phase, in a research of experimental building types and forms able to combine compositional questions with design and technical aspects of the building.

The aim of the teaching is the elaboration of the design of a building facing the questions referring to the urban scale as to the detail scale, considering formal, technical, material and functional issues in their mutual relations.

Within the design process, the conceptual design of a structural system for seismic actions is of special interest, as it requires the adoption of an effective bracing system, in the context of a 3-d resisting frame with regularity properties both in plan and elevation.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

- acquire knowledge and understanding of the techniques and tools for architectural design;

- acquire knowledge and understanding of the principles of seismic structural engineering;

- are capable of facing a critical approach to all necessary scales of an architectural design with advanced levels of specialisation and detail;

- are capable of facing a critical analysis of locations and contexts in the close relationship between building and city, history and taste, and the technique and function of architecture;

- are capable of developing design solutions coherent with the location and context, even in highly complex urban environments;

- are capable of applying the principles of structural seismic engineering in the architectural project.

Design Topic

During the next years Milan will change a lot, with the transformation of the former railway yards and the new public infrastructure associated to the Olympic Games of 2026. The transformation of the railway yards, in particular, will also transform the part of the city immediately next to them, the ring surrounding the historical city included by the Spanish Walls that corresponds to the residential expansion imagined in 1889 by Cesare Beruto. To the clarity and uniformity of this urban fabric corresponded, in Beruto’s plan, an equally clear social identity (dwellings for workers and the lower middle class). Nevertheless, even if the houses remained the same, the social composition of this part of the city radically changed. This ring now hosts the most productive, innovative and cosmopolite population of the entire city. However, considering functions and public space, this part of the city is still the same of hundred years ago. There are secondary schools and high schools, swimming pools, many ugly churches but nothing that might have a real impact on the identity and memory of the entire city. In this area there are no functions recognizable at the metropolitan scale, no important cultural or civil institutions working as attractor, no monuments. All Milanese monuments and urban attractors are still inside the circle of the Spanish Walls, with a few exceptions further outside, such as Fondazione Prada and Hangar Bicocca.

Milan is the only Italian city that is rapidly growing and the success of the city lies (and will lie) also in its possibility of expansion. The undergoing transformations of the railway network, together with
the invisible but constant change of the population of the “Beruto ring”, unveil an unexpected opportunity to transform contemporary Milan.

The “Beruto ring” must consequently change its role, allowing the city to assume a new dimension. New public buildings can be located in this area, overstepping the Spanish Walls and expanding the city centre. Therefore Milan, in opposition to many other big cities, will have the chance to expand while maintaining its stubborn mono-centrism, simply by enlarging its centre. The “Beruto ring” is in fact surprisingly practical and can be a tool to use in order to transform also the city around it. Indeed the “Beruto ring” touches both internal and external parts of the city in multiple ways, allowing to establish complex systems of relationships with other parts of the city. Moreover, this part of the city appears extremely docile, and easy to transform. Acting (with relatively low investments) on the easy (and all in all without problems) city of the Beruto ring, it will be possible to affect in distance some parts of the city that are far more difficult to treat. The “Beruto ring” could transform its role within the metropolis, hosting the functions not present yet in the city: the mosque, a Kunsthalle, a new auditorium, a large library, creating through these elements new relations with the center and with the suburbs.

This research aims to investigate a possible transformation of a crucial public space such as piazzale Loreto as the seat of a contemporary auditorium. Milan in fact – maybe because of the overwhelming presence of its operatic tradition – has no real, ambitious, public auditorium that could play a complementary role to the Scala. The construction of this cultural venue will transform not only a very problematic place such as piazzale Loreto, but spark transformations all along the trajectory of the 90 and 91 bus line.

Modalità di valutazione

Expected final products/deliverables (i.e. publications, exhibitions, video, etc.)

The final product will be a model a group of drawings, and a report describing a design proposal for a new public auditorium in piazzale Loreto. Students will be required to develop drawings and reports in book format from the very beginning of the studio.

The design work will be developed in group and will be assessed through a discussion of the design proposal developed as the final product of the workshop. The design proposal will be presented with printed panels and scale models. The group of students will explain the main features of the project in a brief presentation. The discussion will involve theoretical questions and questions intended to reveal the student’s ability to connect the various topics covered in the program with one another and with previous studies.
