Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Studio proposes an experience in architectural design facing the proper complexity of the process. Contextual, typological, functional, constructive, expressive and formal issues of the architectural design process will be treated in their mutual relationship and interaction. The design is challenged to critically appreciate ongoing transformations in real contexts and propose appropriate solutions. To achieve this goal students are guided: in a first phase, in the comprehension of the context of the project, in the evaluation of the alternative approaches proposed for the case study area in public debates, and in the appreciation of the relations between buildings and urban structure; in a second phase, in a research of experimental building types and forms able to combine compositional questions with design and technical aspects of the building.

The aim of the teaching is the elaboration of the design of a building facing the questions referring to the urban scale as to the detail scale, considering formal, technical, material and functional issues in their mutual relations.

Within the design process, the conceptual design of a structural system for seismic actions is of special interest, as it requires the adoption of an effective bracing system, in the context of a 3-d resisting frame with regularity properties both in plan and elevation.


Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Students:

- acquire knowledge and understanding of the techniques and tools for architectural design;

- acquire knowledge and understanding of the principles of seismic structural engineering;

- are capable of facing a critical approach to all necessary scales of an architectural design with advanced levels of specialisation and detail;

- are capable of facing a critical analysis of locations and contexts in the close relationship between building and city, history and taste, and the technique and function of architecture;

- are capable of developing design solutions coherent with the location and context, even in highly complex urban environments;

- are capable of applying the principles of structural seismic engineering in the architectural project.


Argomenti trattati

Topic

The topic proposed in the studio is  “the intermodal hub in correspondence with urban railway station” and it involves a peculiar aspect of architectural design as the simultaneous usage of different scale in a single building or complex  related to the presence of “huge and medium transport machine” as trains, tramway and buses, and the “human scale”.  Such intermodal hubs requires the definition of complex section able to link and separate the different kind of flows. At the same time Railway station "area" is an urban space “par excellence”  collecting several functions characterising urban life – from commercial, to cultural and entertainment activities.

Cases study

The case study areas are: Milan Central Station with the surrounding squares; Milan Bovisa/Villa Pizzone stations hub. 

The two cases epitomise different situation and possible integration with other urban activities at two different scale and level of interchange with other transport.

Investigation on topic technicalities

In order to define proper characteristics of the “urban intermodal hub”  in a first phase will be required to investigate case studies from world experience with collections of graphic materials and data, completed with re-drawings (as axonometric sections). These investigation will be organised in standard pages in order to form a book-atlas of references.

Design process

The design activity, organised in groups of at least 3 members, will consider urban as well as architectural and detailed scale in coordination with the teaching of prof. Tan Zhu “Architectural Design” and by prof. Vitomir Racic “Structures and Earthquake Resistance Criteria”.

Lectures

Lectures will be focused on specific aspects of station and intermodal hub design as well on question of architectural composition.

Exam

The exams consist on presentation  both of the boards of cases study investigation and group project.

No prerequisites are required


Modalità di valutazione

The evaluation is  based on the public presentation of the design worked out in the studio activity.
