Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The aim of the Studio is to experiment with the complexity of the design, from the idea to the realization, by acquiring knowledge about the ways of controlling the relationships between technological, energetic, environmental and structural aspects, and the experimentation and innovation paths of techniques, processes and how to design the project. The Studio aims to illustrate the cognitive, methodological, organizational and procedural tools in the different stages of the building process aimed at the constructability of complex new architectural interventions or the redevelopment of the existing one. Particular attention in the Design and Construction Studio is reserved for functional, constructive and environmental choices in relation to structural design and anti-seismic design criteria from the early stages of the project.

Expected learning outcomes are the ability to develop a feasibility and constructability project; in particular the design capacity of the constructive dimension, the constraints related to the environmental, physical, regulatory and cultural context in which the intervention is located, the ways of use; coordinated and interdisciplinary management of the technological, structural and energetic-environmental themes that form the project on the basis of priority requirements; anticipating decisions and evaluating the different technical options available today; application of the tools to support project decisions.

According to the Dublin Descriptors (DdD), passing the exam certifies the acquisition of the following results:

DdD 2 ability to apply knowledge and understanding

- ability to develop projects that are attentive to the constructive dimension, to the constraints related to the environmental, physical, normative and cultural context in which the intervention is located, to the usability and to the verification of the technical feasibility;

- ability to govern the complexity of the project, from the conceptual phase to the implementation phase.

 

DdD 3 (autonomy of judgment), 4 (communication skills) and 5 (learning ability)

The Design and Construction Studio aims at introducing the students to the complexity of the design process of a building, from the concept and briefing stage to the development of the documents needed to communicate design information to the construction stage. This requires a good understanding of the processes of design and construction necessary for development in the built environment, where the needs, values and objectives of the client, the users and the community must be reconciled to the characteristics of the building itself and of its embedded values. The Studio comprehends two sections: Technological and Environmental Design and Structures and Earthquakes resistance Criteria. The two section will be strongly integrated and will mainly relate with construction techniques, materials, spaces, performances and values that represent an actual resource which must be carefully and thoroughly evaluated in the design process. The design will require the use of contextualized technologies. The design proposal will be developed through the technical regulation control stage (form, space, structure, etc.) and a number of detailed construction drawings, specifications and plastic models. Beyond studio work, which will represent the main activity, some important issues will be further developed in lectures and seminars (also by the presentation of case studies) about the architectural use of buildings materials, constructions systems, the life cycle assessment, the structural systems, the rational use of energy, renewable energy and environmental impact, the principles of structural design in the context of analysis of a building, the total integration of different disciplines inside the architectural design of a building. The body of the Architecture will be our Studio investigating skin and bones understanding anatomy of the building thru the use of the sections and the simulations.

Expected learning outcomes

Expected learning outcomes are the ability to develop a buildable project. In particular the design capacity of managing:

  • the proper architectonic dimension;
  • the constraints related to the environmental, physical, regulatory and cultural context in which the intervention is based;
  • the ways of use;
  • the coordinated and interdisciplinary control of technological and structural issues of the project, based on priority requirements;
  • developing design proposals aimed to the reduction of both operational and embodied energy and emissions.
  • Moreover the ability to anticipate the decision-making of the different technical options available today and to use the tools to support project decisions.
  • In particular the Studio comprehends two interconnected sections: Technological and environmental design, Structure and Earthquake resistance criteria.

The first section will mainly relate with construction techniques, materials, spaces, performances and values and environmental issues that represent an actual resource which must be carefully and thoroughly evaluated in the design process.

 The second one will focus on the criteria leading to the selection of the best structural solution (materials, structural scheme, construction techniques) with respect to the different design requirements.

The course will investigate how the design of functional and structural issues, on one side, esthetical, environmental and material constrains on the other side, can be firstly conceptualized  then deepened in detailed drawings, in order to answer to the ever-changing scenario and modelling buildings responsive to climatic changes.

Main educational targets

The classroom workshop aims to synthesize information acquired along the semester and during the previous courses and laboratories, by designing, modelling and simulating a building system, and investigating both physical models and analytical tools. The project is where this crucial synthesis takes place.

Students are introduced to verify and apply into the project acquired abilities (technology, history, architectural composition, analysis of physical and social context, study of program requirements) and new pieces of information acquired during the in the course (architecture technology, structural design). The target is gained through a progressive effort in approaching the final result.

The learning goal of every student a is to achieve a personal capability to approach technologies and techniques as a tool that should be used into the architectural project, where the architecture will emerge as a whole, from the coherent balance of the beauty, safety, and functional issues.

 Design & Research Tools

-  TEXTILEs’ HUB - the multidisciplinary laboratory of Textiles, composites and polymers (http://www.polimi.it/en/scientific-research/research-structures/interdepartmental-laboratories/textiles-hub-interdepartmental-textiles-and-polymers-research-laboratory/ ) will host every practical activity during the prototyping phase.

-  Some specific design tools will be available for those students aimed to deep experimental design processes.

-  A specific list of further references  and research paths will be available on the BEEP platform.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Design and Construction Studio aims at introducing the students to the complexity of the design process of a building, from the concept and briefing stage to the development of the documents needed to communicate design information to the construction stage. This requires a good understanding of the processes of design and construction necessary for development in the built environment, where the needs, values and objectives of the client, the users and the community must be reconciled to the characteristics of the building itself and of its embedded values. It refers, in particular, to the ability to anticipate the decision-making of the different technical options available today and to use the tools to support project decisions.

The students will be challenged to overcome the traditional relation between “Standardization and Customization” and to evaluate the assumption “Mass production vs. Mass customization” in relation to the optimization of the design process through modelling.

Expected learning outcomes are the ability to develop a buildable project, which mainly refers to the design capacity of managing: the proper architectonic dimension; the constraints related to the environmental, physical, regulatory and cultural context in which the intervention is based; the ways of use; the coordinated and interdisciplinary control of technological and structural issues of the project, based on priority requirements; to provide both operational and embodied energy and emission reduction in the design proposals; the ability to anticipate the decision-making of the different technical options available today and to use the tools to support project decisions.

STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE

The programme will deepen, on one side, how the design of functional and structural issues and, on the other side, esthetical, environmental and material constraints can be firstly conceptualized, then studied in detailed drawings, in order to answer to the ever-changing scenario and modelling buildings responsive to climatic changes.

In particular, the Studio comprehends two interconnected sections: “Technological and environmental design” and “Structures and earthquake resistance criteria”. The first section deals with the architectural technology and the consistent choice of construction techniques and materials in architecture. The space requirements, the building performances and values, as well as the environmental issues will must be carefully and thoroughly evaluated in the design process. The second section instead will focus on the criteria leading to the selection of the best structural solution (materials, structural scheme, construction techniques) with respect to the different design requirements.

PROJECT TOPIC

The course intends to dig the designing of the sport facilities, declining the contents of innovation, multidisciplinarity and scaling through offline design and simulation of structures by means of virtual representations and plugins for the structural analysis. The students will be encouraged to select lightweight materials and off-site costruction techniques as much as possible, with the aim to optimize the materials' quantities embedded into the buildigns and to design more efficient and enviromentally compatible structures.

The reversibility and the re-usability of the whole building will become a design strategy since the early-stage design process, while the architecture and its structural components will have to be developed in close relation with the time of their expected service life.

Furthermore, the students will face the issue of durability of building materials and products, and they will learn how make the buildign more efficient and long-lasting thanks to the well-designed interfarces between different materials.

Modalità di valutazione

The DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION STUDIO is based on the design activity in which the student acquires the ability to control and coordinate inside the design process building technologies and structural elements. Furthermore Students will be required to: 1) deep the use of parametric software in order to assess alternatives from the very beginning of the design phase; 2) improve the optical, thermal and acoustic performances of the building systems contemporararely to the development of the structural concept and analysis; 3) include the following items in their project.

Learning activities are configured through:

- lectures and seminars held by the teachers, also with the contribution of external speakers;

- tutoring in the classroom;

- supplementary activities extra classroom for the study, the graphics processing and research.

The classroom workshop will be organised in small design team of 2-3 classmates 3, while the semester will be divided in 3-4 main assignments’ submission before the final exam.

After every submission each design team will receive the evaluation, which will be taken into account during the final exam.

The final exam will deal with both at the level of the design team and of the single student: a) the discussion of the project developed by the design team throughout the 3 main assignments); b) a discussion on the books which each student have read and studied in number of at least 2 book of each classmate of the same design team.
