Detailed program and learning outcomes

The "Complementary Doctoral Skills" course consists in four independent modules.

Part 1. Assessing cognitive biases and affective states through data analytics I

Module responsible: Prof. Mara Tanelli (DEIB)

The module aims at presenting a multifaceted topic, which is that of the quantitative assessment of cognitive biases and affective states. Such a process involves many different disciplines, such as neuroscience, social and behavioural psychology, linguistics, affective computing, machine learning and data analytics. The course aims at presenting an integrated vision of this challenging research with a multi-disciplinary teachers’ pool that will be able to provide insights on all aspects. The first part of the course, which is offered within the "Complementary Doctoral Skills" will focus on a neuro-scientific presentation of the nature of cognitive bias and affective states and on their linguistic analysis. Finally, an overview of the effects of gender stereotypes and biases in organizations will be presented. There will be a second matching part of the course of 2.5CFU, offered within the "Data Analytics and Decision Sciences" Ph.D course program, which tackles the algorithmic and data-driven approaches that can be employed to measure and automatically classifiy cognitive bias and affective states.

Part 2. Gender Cultures [in Italian]

Module responsible: Prof. Valeria Bucchetti (DESIGN)

The module aims at offering the students the possibility to encompass the meaning of gender in contemporary societies from different points of views: cultural, social, political, economic and scientific. As open discussions on the topic will be encouraged, the module does require a general interest in gender related topics, and a sensitivity to equality and equal opportunities issues.

Part 3. Discriminations and new technologies: risks and opportunities

Module responsible: Prof. Fiammetta Costa (DESIGN)

The aim of the module is two-fold. On the one hand it provides tools (both regulatory and psychological) to prevent and challenge dysfunctional situations. On the other hand it stimulates the development of research themes aimed at supporting those categories most at risk of fragility (age, disability, gender, nationality) in relation to new technologies.

Part 4. Digital (Scientific) Literature, Bibliographies and Bibliometrics

Module responsible: Prof. Enrico De Angelis (ABC Dept)

The module aims to introduce PhD Students to the use of Digital Scientific Literature, to train for systematic search within the many available information clusters, to perform quantitative analysis on their results and to organize their references in order to realize interesting literature reviews.

Notes on methods of assessing

Each module can be followed separately, and includes an independent assessment.

The five credits associated with the "Complementary Doctoral Skills" course are earned only when at least two modules are attended, and the respective examinations are passed (with mark A/B/C/D). One single module does not earn any credits.

The mark associated with the "Complementary Doctoral Skills" course will be the worst among the two best marks obtained in the single independent modules. To make a specific example:

- an "A" and a "C" provide a "C" as a final mark

- an "A", a "B" and a "C" provide a "B" as a final mark

- an "A", an "A" and a "D" provide an "A" as a final mark.
