Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The course aims at providing PhD Candidate with instruments to improve their skill in presenting, interview and negotiating. The course adopt traditional lesson but it is mostly base on serious gaming and simulation.

The course addresses these topics

 Interviewing

How to conduct an interview?

Analyzing the context of the interview and your aims. Asking the right questions. Dealing with unwilling interviewees. Asking confrontational questions. Validation and triangulation. Direct and indirect questions. Leading questions. Meta-questions.

Students will be interviewed by teachers and will interview their fellow students. The method is ‘from practice to theory’ - first, the student will practice interviewing, followed by teachers’ analysis and presentation of the main concepts from the literature on interview techniques.

 Speeching and pitching

The students will take two workshops. The first is about the content of a powerful speech - Hans de Bruijn will analyse Barack Obamas speeches and will present a series of rhetorical storylines, that might help to convince the audience. Rose Drenth will work with the students on the technique of a presentation: body language, dealing with nervousness, connecting to the audience, the congruence between content and presentation. Teachers will take into account several contextual elements: the audience, the expectations of the audience, your relationship with the listeners, the aim of the pitch, the impact you would like it to have.

After the two workshops, each student will deliver a 90 second pitch and will get feed back from Hans de Bruijn and Rose Drenth.

 Negotiating

This module will start with a lecture by Hans de Bruijn about negotiation techniques - what techniques work in what contexts?. Subsequently, the students will take two workshops. In each workshop, they will negotiate and will learn negotiation techniques, including good guy- bad guy, BATNA, activating third parties, using interests in stead of opinions, etc

 Framing and debating

First, Hans will talk about framing and about debating techniques. The students will analyse several videos with debates, in order to find out what the underlying techniques are. Second, students will be asked to enter into a debate with Rose and Arjan and to apply these techniques - Hans will analyse their performance.

 Application

In a series of workshops. students will be faced with unforeseen situations and will have to apply the lessons learned during the first four days.
