099053 - TOOLS AND METHODS FOR THE ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT - Course syllabus

The course provides an introduction to a set of methodologies aiming at measuring the spatial extent of the economic structure and performance of the built environment. In particular, the course offers a broad overview of both descriptive (statistical) as well as interpretative (econometric) methods. At the end of the course, the student will be capable of highlighting the main economic features and the determinants of economic performance of the built environment.

More in detail, the course deals with the following topics:

  1. Economic analysis of the built environment: why does the built environment exist? Which are the drivers of economic growth in the built environment?
  2. Measurement of economic specialization of the built environment: location quotients, indices of concentration and diversification
  3. Descriptive and spatial statistics for the built environment
  4. Descriptive measurement of the dynamic performance of the built environment: shift-share analysis
  5. Inference tools for the measurement of the dynamic performance of the built environment
  6. Hands-on crash course on writing a scientific paper/essay: how to innovate on the existing literature?

Students will learn both the theory behind each tool as well as the practical calculations needed for each tool. Students are graded on the basis of an applied take-home, with the application of one or more tools studied during the course to an urban area. The applied essay will be discussed in the very last lecture of the course in front of the class.
