Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The ‘SMDP’ program will explore the foundation of the design of the built environment from the scale of the building to the larger urban context. The goal of the course is to enable students to acquire an integrated design methodology for tackling some of the most urgent contemporary challenges. The program will provide the opportunity to explore an innovative, integrated and multidisciplinary design approach for re-imagining the future of our city and environment for encouraging lasting change in their transition toward the low carbon society. Through lectures and design exercises, students are provided an opportunity to establish a reference for understanding the discipline of architecture and environmental design and the correlation with other disciplines

Through a series of individual and group exercises, tutorials and through innovative teaching activities in form of flipped and blended classroom, students will learn fundamental principles of the architectural/urban design process oriented toward the sustainable development defined by the UN SDGs. The programme will emphasize the interdisciplinary, holistic and multi-scale approach and encourages both collaborative research and more introspective, individual modes of thinking and practice. The programme is structured to offers individual opportunities within collaborative frameworks. Lectures, exercise sessions and flipped classroom activities will allow students to learn:

  • Fundaments of urban Morphology
  • Typological organisation and Technological construction methodologies. 
  • Correlation between architectural design and urban context.
  • To gain unifying architectural spatial qualities with engineering characteristics.

To investigate the relationship between architectural design and urban forms in terms of their physical characteristics and correlation with their energy performance


Argomenti trattati

Working with many different media, students will discover the interrelationship of architecture and urban design with its related disciplines, such as sustainability, Energy efficiency, Engineering, Building construction and the visual reppresentation.  The main topics of the course will be:

  • System Thinking.
  • Fundaments of urban Morphology
  • Multidisciplinary approach  
  • City/Context/urban Morphology/architectural Transformation.
  • City as a Complex Adaptive System. Optimization processes
  • Urban morphology, Energy consumption and Environmental performance.  
  • Scale and principles of urban growth.
  • Architecture and spatial characteristic

 A project laboratory is integral part of the course.

No pre-requisites are necessary


Modalità di valutazione

The final evaluation is individual. The final mark will be based on the result of a Studio teamwork that will be submitted at the end of the semester and consisting of drawings (plan, sections, elevations, details) sketches and illustrations of the development of design ideas. Presentations will include Physical models and other three-dimensional work, graphic, oral and written work. During the semester it will be asked to the students to submit 9 individual or group Tutorials and to prepare individuals essay.

Professors will weekly explain tutorials. The final mark of the course will be composed as follows:

  • 66% 
  • Attendance/Presence 4% 
  • Participation 5% 
  • Final presentation and Group project. 25%
