Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Studio is an 'international field' of theoretical research and advanced experimentation.

The reality, everywhere, asks architecture a thorough cultural and ethical responsibility. Therefore the teaching aims to consolidate disciplinary knowledge and theoretical references, to feed critical attitudes, to induce conscious design choices. These tools allow to tackle the design of complex new buildings, with awareness of its formal, functional, structural, technological components.

The complexity of the design processes is faced and managed through the interconnection between the teachings of Architectural design, Architectural composition, Structure, Technology and design in BIM environment. The trans-disciplinary approach nourishes rationality and imagination and the possibility of recomposing form, function and construction in unitary visions, bearers of new reasons and meanings.

Lectures, project reviews, workshops, study trips, exhibitions and seminars will allow students to acquire the knowledge and skills appropriate to the start and the development of the first year of master's degree:

-the attitude to consider architecture as a form of knowledge, as critical thinking, as a tool for understanding reality in the perspective of its virtuous and ethical transformation;

-the ability to know and interpret the physical and social complex contexts with the awareness of the transformation that a new architectural intervention will produce;

-the ability to learn and elaborate the multidisciplinary skills of the compositional and structural components besides the Bim process and parametric models;

the ability to face the design process of a complex architecture from the conceptualization to the development of all typological, functional, structural and technological aspects;

-the individual capacity of making judgments using multiple criteria in the evaluation of design decisions providing a range of benefits, social values and sustainable costs;

-the ability of communication using the most effective verbal and means of representation in the argument of ideas and design choices in all areas of confrontation and discussion.

Argomenti trattati

The Studio is aimed at progressing students’ disciplinary knowledge, theoretical tools and integrated design skills in order to grasp the “complexity” of Architecture: the search for a balance between “vision” and construction, between form and technical innovation, to respond to issues significant for contemporary social, economic and urban transformationsThe design topic will focus students' attention on the role of architecture in the transformation processes of the 21st century city: an “urban device” acting in both physical and cultural setting of the city and capable of shaping new urban environments and civic spaces.

Students will be required to examine their conceptual and design propositions for the renewal of Città Studi as a multifunctional urban university campus, through the reuse of spaces and buildings vacated by the relocation of the Università Statale’s science departments to the former Expo area and the inclusion of new qualified functions open to the public use and linked to three Milanese universities (Politecnico, Bicocca and Statale).

The Studio will explore the relationships between new interventions _ architectures and open spaces _ and strategic masterplan, starting from a hypothesis that will be presented, discussed and implemented at the very beginning of the semester. 

Students will be asked to investigate and interpret the contemporary concept of Campus, focusing on the spatial, functional and infrastructural relationships between campus and city, and on the capability of what could still represent a “university district”, almost completely reserved for an academic community, to become a “piece of the city” of high urban quality and renewed vitality.

The main question is the role the new “complex” university facilities can assume within the overall spatial organization of the campus, focusing on the innovative elements they can introduce with respect to the settlement models and principles that have been setting Città Studi until today and to the landscape, architecture and social life of the campus.

The architectural project will test the capacities of the masterplan’s “plots” to accommodate multipurpose buildings (developed up to the scale of technical and executive detail) whose experimental type can reshape conventions of learning and research environments and their relations with the urban life.

The design of a new Aula Magna, a multifunctional “podium” (Campus Center) or the Città Studi Museum as strategic centralities for a deeper integration between campus and city will also provide an opportunity for addressing the contemporary international debate on the relationship between city, university and architecture.


The Studio will propose a study trip to the Netherlands, wherein the most innovative university campuses will be visited, as well as remarkable contemporary architectures and urban transformations.

Laurea (equivalent to Bachelor of Science) in the classes provided for the admission to the MSc.

Assessment methods and criteria.

Student activities will be carried out in groups and will be developed in different phases. Each of these periods will correspond to specific training activities and project experiences; it will end with a presentation of the work, by the students, to the committee formed by all the teachers of the Studio. The Board, every time, will give each student an evaluation based on the coherence between pre-established goals and the levels of acquired cultural awareness.

The final exam will be a significant moment of critical argumentation and constructive discussion of the project design, where each student will have to demonstrate:

- ability in the cognitive and interpretative procedures  of spatial and cultural contexts;

- in-depth disciplinary knowledge of theories and techniques of complex constructions;

- ability to apply integrated structural, constructive solutions to the expressive and formal choices of architecture;

- methodological coherence throughout the design process, from the goals to the development  of the formal;

  typological, functional, structural and technological aspects;

- modelling capacity in BIM environment;

- ability to define and use criteria for evaluating design choices;

- ability to argue and critically expose the project through the most effective drawings and models.
