The urban phenomenon is an relevant dimension for understanding contemporary society. First of all because worldwide the majority of the population lives in cities, secondly city can be considered a space of social innovation and a strategic place where most important social trends are largely manifested- globalisation, new technologies, and social cultural diversities. These macro-trends combined with the processes of metropolitan expansion have modified the traditional urban model. In specific it can be pointed out the breaking and the expansion of the traditional borders of historical cities with the relocation of the residential, commercial area and new settlements of commercial and entertainment amenities. Within this scenario the notion of city is under discussion and it is necessary to re-defining the contemporary urban settlements and their populations. Using the analytical tools and the major theory of the urban sociology , the course is focused on the social dynamics of the contemporary society and the major transformation paying a particular attention on social organisations and the life of its inhabitants:

Social inequality and urban exclusion of the contemporary city Dimension and consequences of the urban mobility Transformation of the urban settlements and housing issues Urban regeneration urban governance and spatial planning urban social research: which data and how to work with them?
