Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The Studio is oriented towards architectural design at different intervention scales, with particular attention to the spatial, typological and infrastructural aspects of urban phenomena. The architectural Design is developed in different phases related to the description, interpretation and transformation of contemporary contexts, proposing design as a dynamic process aimed at providing appropriate solutions to complex problems. On the one hand, it divides theoretical and methodological aspects, concerning the problems and techniques of contemporary design and the transformation of the environment, on the other hand into application and experimental aspects, aimed at controlling typological and spatial characteristics, as well as structural and constructive problems.

The aim of the teaching is the elaboration of tool for the design practice, defining principles, criteria and strategies for the modification the contemporary settlements in their relationships with the landscape. The complexity of this kind of decisions calls for an evaluation framework able to integrate information on effects and impacts of the design alternatives under investigation, with values and preferences of stakeholders. Multicriteria analysis (MCA) offers such a framework and it is increasingly used in combination with several evaluation techniques. Given these premises, the goal of the course Multicriteria Analysis and Project Appraisal is to provide students with theoretical principles and methodologies for projects sustainability (economic, social and environmental) evaluation.

The students will acquire

 

- knowledge and understanding of the categories, strategies and tools for architectural design;

- competence in developing a critical approach at the different scales of advanced architectural design;

- autonomy in evaluating design conditions and processes and in solving complex problems related to the characters of the different contexts, from landscapes to urban fabrics;

- skills in communicating the design proposal being active promoters of their proposals;

- capability in learning to face the design process and to work in design team


Argomenti trattati

The main objective of the studio for the 2018/2019 Academic Year, is to generate a strategy/project for a vast area of the city of Oporto. The chosen area is the last part of the city where big urban voids, an abandoned industrial structure, as well as a semi demolished barrier meet the most intense natural area combining river and a granite cliff.

This area, designated Arrábida, is one of the most debated and politically daring area of the contemporary city, and has the unique natural context that makes its value rise in between market and natural protection. This area has all the arguments for generating a high important reflexion about Architecture and Landscape. The program will have main guidelines for the students to start their research, but at the same time it should be flexible enough to incorporate new themes and areas as the strategy moves forward.

The main guideline program, proposes a master plan, housing for several purposes, trading areas with multi purpose offices, public equipment, a riverfront pier and a vast area to develop a natural park/garden for the city. This project will be designated by its local name “Arrábida“ and will be done in 3 different phases: master plan, program research and communication.

Modalità di valutazione

The students will be settled in groups, and the maximum number of groups will be 10. The 10 groups will have a weekly review, which will be commend, criticized and developed as in the process. There will be mid critic session in the beginning of November, and the students will get a reference mark, from A to D (A very good and D requires revision). The final evaluation will be done at the end of the semester when the students will present their group project with 3 main elements: Book, Video/ PowerPoint/ PDF and a Model. The marks will be submitted accordingly to Polimi.
