Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course is aimed developing the student's design critical skills and synthesis ability  by introducing and discussing the innovative methodologies for mechanical design and their application  with modern tools for engineering design.


Risultati di apprendimento attesi

The students will possess the knowledge of the methods used for the design and assessment of mechanical systems, from the conceptual design to the final design of details.

Thanks to the Design Laboratory and the practice  the students will gain the capability to apply their knowledge and understanding to the development of mechanical systems.

The Design Lab is developed in strict cooperation and in collaboration with the course "Methods and  Tools for Systematic Innovation I.C." and includes the development of a mechanical system, starting from the concept to the final drawings while the practices are mainly focussed on design by analysis. The final reports that the students are asked to write will improve the capability on writing a technical design report.


Argomenti trattati

The course is divided in two parts: in the first one the concepts and the problems that characterize engineering design methods, techniques and strategies.

In the second part these aspects are used to solve engineering design practical problems in some important industrial sector, the power transmission systems and the pressure vessels. During the exercise time the theoretical topics are applied to specific cases.

An engineering design lab is also scheduled, where teams formed by 3 students will develop the complete development of a project. Seminars by well known engineers are also scheduled during the course.

 

Subjects

Introduction to Engineering Design

Engineering Design Theory: mechanical system, life cycle, feasibility analysis. The role of codes and standards in Engineering Design: Design by Rules and Design by Analysis.

Design methodologies: DfX, Design for Asssembly and Manufacturing (DfMA) with particular referrence to plastic systems. Design for Reliability, Design for Environment, Design for Disassembly.

Life cycle analysis.

Fatigue Design, complements: Fatigue Design methodologies, Fatigue assessment under variable amplitude loads.

Design by Rules and Design by Analysis: the cases of Pressure Vessel Design and Fatigue Design of Weldings

Robust Design: Design of Experiments (Taguchi approach)

Design optimization: Topological optimization, Multiojective optimization.

 

Practice

During practice time students will be asked to solve probkems and exercises about the subjects of the curse.

 

Design Lab

Students will be asked to form groups to develop the design of a mechanical system (in co-operation with the course METHODS AND TOOLS FOR SYSTEMATIC INNOVATION I.C., Prof. Gaetano Cascini).


Prerequisiti

The courses assumes that the students already possess the basic knowledge and skills of Machine Design II.


Modalità di valutazione

The groups are asked to present the results of the Design Lab before the exam. This part of the exam is aimed at assessing the results of the project and the communication skills of the groups' members.

The individual exam is formed by a written test (duration 1h) aimed at assessing the global understadning and knowledge of the main aspects of the course and an oral discussion aimed at assessing the critical ability of the students to apply knowledge and understanding of the subjects of the course and to critical disucss the sujects of the course.

The students are not admitted to the oral discussion if the written test is not passed.

The evaluation will be based on the Design Lab, the written test and the oral discussion results.
