097671 - ELECTRIC SYSTEM FOR TRANSPORTATION C
Obiettivi dell'insegnamento
The course will provide the students of the basic elements in the field of electric power systems for transportation, with particular reference to ground transportation systems for people, goods and merchandises. Electric traction installation for rail and urban services are described in their main principles with reference to the DC supply and the AC one, this latter considering both industrial and rail frequency.
In the second part of the course, the devices and the systems on board of the trains are presented and integrated with technical visits to real power infrastructures and vehicles maintenance sites.
Electric systems for road electric vehicles (charging infrastructures) are presented and discussed.
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
Lectures and exercise sessions will allow students to:
- know and discuss about different electric power supply systems for transportation
- design the size and the location of electric substations for supplying pubblic transportation systems as train, subway, tram, etc.
- know and discuss about the high-speed railway lines
- know and discuss about the apparatus and systems on board of the trains: motors, drives, traction circuit and auxiliary components
- know and discuss about the multi-systems rolling stocks for the interoperability
- know and discuss about the power charging stations for electric vehicles
- technical visits will allow the student to know the real consistency, size and operation of the apparatus and devices described in the lectures
Argomenti trattati
1.: Electric Traction: overview of electrified transportation systems and economical evaluation of electrified railroad lines.
2.:Direct Current Supply: DC power generation, rectifiers and power converters, electric substation, voltage and current harmonics and filters, line voltage drops, disturbances, the problem of stray currents and related corrosion .
3.: Alternate Current Supply: single phase AC supply at rail frequency, single phase AC supply at industrial frequency, the electric substations, problems related to the connection at AC three-phase power supply transmission network;, electric and electromagnetics disturbances.
4.: DC Rolling Stock: Traction circuits, the line current absorption devices, motors and protection systems, the speed control, the auxiliary services.
5.: AC Rolling Stock: Traction circuits, motors and protection systems, the speed control, the auxiliary services.
6.: Diesel-electric Rolling Stock: General description of the operation.
7.: High Speed Rail Lines: System operation and control.
8.: Electric Road Vehicles: Connection of the charging stations to the mains, AC and DC charging modes, base structure of an electric road vehicle.
9.: Exercise classes: They will consist in seminars on particular subjects (i.e. signalling systems) and technical visits to infrastructures and rolling stocks
Prerequisiti
students are required to know the basic elements of electric circuits.
Modalità di valutazione
The exam consists in a mid term written test (optional) by means of one or two questions on the topics related to points 1,2,3 of the program. The fiinal oral exam will consist on two questions related to points 4,5,6,7,8 of the program for those that passed the mid term test. For the students that decide not to do the mid term test or did not pass it, the oral exam will include all the topicis of the course from point 1 to point 8.
The exam permits to verify the expected knowledge given on the course: different electric power systems for transportation; design the size and the location of electric substations for supplying pubblic transportation systems as train, subway, tram, etc.; high-speed railway lines supply; apparatus and systems on board of the trains (motors, drives, traction circuit and auxiliary components); multi-systems rolling stocks for the interoperability; the power charging stations for electric vehicles.
The oral exam also permits to verify the skill of the students on presenting the subjects of the course and the appropriate terminolgy in this particular technical domain.
The book is a reference text for engineers and industry professionals working in this field, too. Only the main general part of the chapters will be dealt with in the course.
