Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

This course is designed to provide students with the concepts and instruments necessary for understanding and analysing industrial practices in terms of their environmental performance (eco-efficiency). The course it demonstrates how industrial eco-efficiency serves as a driver for competitiveness through innovation in technology and operations. highlighting the relationships among production, consumption, sustainability, and industrial ecology. Emphasis is given to a systemic and engineering approach to eco-efficiency by learning conceptual frameworks, modelling and analytical methods.

 

The course fits into the overall program curriculum pursuing some of the defined general learning goals. In particular, the course contributes to the development of the following capabilities:

  • Understand context, functions, processes in a business and industrial environment and the impact of those factors on business performance.
  • Identify trends, technologies and key methodologies related to industrial eco-efficiency.
  • Design solutions applying a scientific and engineering approach (Analysis, Learning, Reasoning, and Modelling capability deriving from a solid and rigorous multidisciplinary background) to face problems and opportunities in a business and industrial environment.

A student that has successfully attended the course is expected to:

Regarding "Understand”:

  • Know the fundamental principles of industrial eco-efficiency and related concepts
  • Understand and interpret the role of industrial eco-efficiency in the current competitive environment and its evolution
  • Understand the impact of eco-efficiency approaches on business operations and on the industrial system

Regarding “Identify”:

  • Able to identify appropriate instruments for analysing the impact of industrial operations on the environment
  • Able to identify opportunities for improving environmental performance of companies

Regarding “Design”:

  • Able to discern and develop the most appropriate practices and implementation approaches for eco-efficiency

Argomenti trattati
  • Basics of industrial eco-efficiency: Principles of sustainability, Industrial ecology, Circular economy, Evolution of approaches to eco-efficiency.
  • Eco-efficiency at the company level: Pollution Prevention and Waste minimization, Green product design, Product and Material End-of-Life Management: reuse, remanufacture, recycling, Extended producer responsibility.
  • Eco-efficiency at the industrial system level: Green Supply Chain Management, Critical Materials and Resource-Efficient Supply Chain, Closed-loop supply chain design and management, Industrial Symbiosis and Eco-industrial Parks, “In The Loop” game session.
  • Eco-efficiency analysis instruments: Environmental Management System, Material Flow Analysis, Life Cycle Assessment, Environmental Key Performance Indicators (KPI).

Prerequisiti

This course does not require any specific prior knowledge of the topic.


Modalità di valutazione

The course is organised into lectures, discussion of case studies, in-class exercises, seminars from managers and a gaming session.

 

Major Assignment: Groups of students will be engaged in actively applying concepts and instruments of industrial eco-efficiency by means of a major assignment. The assignment may take the form of a state-of-the-art review report, or a systematic analysis of industrial practices by making use of the methods and protocols presented in class. The assignment is intended to evaluate a student’s ability to critically analyse a novel problem and discuss possible alternative solutions, by integrating different perspectives and contributions emerging in the team.

During classes, some minor assignments will be suggested, to be completed on a voluntary basis.

 

Oral exam: is intended to evaluate a student’s ability to discuss and link different topics of the course.

 

Grading / Student evaluation based on course assignments: 

Major assignment = 50%; Oral exam = 50%. Minor assignments may award the student with max 1/30 point each
