Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The course aims to deepen the problems related to the history of architecture and the city - and their theories - from the second post-war to the first decade of the 21st century. The course intends to focus on the most significant authors, works and urban contexts of Western (European and American) and Eastern (Asian) cultures, reaching the narrowest contemporary. During the lessons will be presented the methodologies of reading the architectural work and the urban design, highlighting the plurality of interpretations and the mutation of the relationships and perspectives set up in the contemporary period between the project and history, architecture and transformation of the city. The aim is to start the student in critical reading of the architectures and texts, in relation to the main interpretive schools and the framing of the main developments in the history of architecture. The course is divided into ex cathedra lessons, exercises, visits, possible tests in the itinerary. In terms of competences, the expected results of the course consist first of all in learning and knowledge of the history of contemporary architecture, particularly in its latest developments, from the Second World War to the present, including the most significant theories connected to it. In terms of capacity, instead, the course intends to activate the student with a critical awareness capable of producing a stand-alone judgment of authors, works, urban contexts, architecture theories and historical methodologies.

Argomenti trattati

The History of Architecture class  aims to  investigate some peculiar  aspects of the italian way to modernity, paying  attention to questions arised by the extensive heritage of built  and unbuilts corpus of projects and ideas in post WWII era in Italy and, mainly, in Milano.

Moving from a general overview of theories emerging in  Italy since the Reconstruction period, lectures will focus on the analysis of case studies  and critical issues, pointing  out the specific character of italian contemporary architecture, from 1945 ‘till today.

Events, buildings, main figures  (among the others: Gio Ponti, Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Asnago e Vender, Vico Magistretti, Franco Albini, 'till to Aldo Rossi and Renzo Piano) and major historiographic interpretations will be analyzed from the starting point of relationships between project, urban development and critical frame in a contest of ex cathedra lectures and walking tours.

The dublefold  character of architecture (theory and physical body) togheter with interior design, built practice, urban and landscape design will be object of critical investigation by the students, who will produce papers or other personal visual format as part of the final review.
