Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

Urban Planning and Design Studio encompasses the subjects of Urban Design (Antonio Longo) and Urban Planning (Matteo Motti). The Studio is based on a design experience crossing the two practices and disciplines with a critical research attitude. The aim of the Studio is to guide students to an advanced design practice that integrates planning objectives and tools.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

Knowledge: students will acquire critical and practical knowledge of the main problems that characterize the urban planning and design practice and the selected project field with reference to practical and direct investigations and to the literature rewiew.

Practical skills: students will acquire theoretical and practical skills in the design of the territory, in the logical organization of the project, in the critical ripresentation of the research work.

Relational skills: the course attributes a strong relevance to the ability in interacting and listening within the groups and is managed as a collective research by design experience.

Individual responsablity and autonomy: although work is organized by groups, each student is asked to take an active, responsible and recognizable role within the group. This is also the reason why the final exam consists both in the presentation and discussion of the work and in an individual interview to identify the specific contribution of each student, and the mastery and awareness about the work done and the lessons and seminars that have fed him.

Argomenti trattati

The Studio focuses on European cities and territories, considered as a palimpsest, or rather, a dynamical superposition of phenomena in continuous evolution. Several different urban dynamics and issues are nowadays gradually shaping some “new urban questions”. Accordingly, it is possible to state that an urban region, or a part of it, could be known and understood through planning and design activities. Yet, both are considered not as codified professional activities, but rather as reflective practices aimed at understanding and fostering the change of "living and reactive" urban environments.

Students of the Studio will be required to investigate a wide transect within the Metropolitan Area of Milanand to provide a re-composition project for it, while working at different scales and dealing with specific issues and topics. The main aim of the project should be to improve the quality of people’s life, as well as the quality of the environment in which they live; considering people’s needs, different kinds of heritage, features of the environments and landscapes, welfare facilities, transport systems, besides some possible new investment and development.

The design project will concern both design of physical transformation, land use and planning coding at different scales. In-class activities will consist of a set of lectures, student-led presentations, group reviews and public seminars.

The different activities that students will be required to perform will be both individual (for the first 3 weeks) and collective (for the rest of the semester students will work in group of 3 or 4 persons); structured in three main steps as follow:

  1. Providing a description of the urban section and its main connected issues (individual reporting);
  2. Outlining the project, moving from territorial issues toward design themes (group reporting with a synthesis table);
  3. Designing the re-composition scheme (group reporting with a table and/or a scale model).

Prerequisiti

The course is located at the beginning of the MSc path and is conceived to merge together students with different previous formative experiences and provide them a common ground of knownledges and expertises in the field of urban planning and design.

Therefore no other specific prerequisites are required.

Modalità di valutazione

ASSESSMENT

The final evaluation will assess all the presentations and works produced by each group of students during the course (firstintermediate and final steps). The evaluation will be completed by an individual discussion about the contents of the course.

The elements for the evaluation of the individual performance are the following: attendance; active participation in the group work and reviews; mastery of the team work; mastery of the course contents (lectures and bibliographical references).
