Obiettivi dell'insegnamento

The integrated course in Urbanism aims at providing by two joined modules of teaching (Urban Design and Urbanism: Issues and Tools) an introduction to urban design fundamentals in a critical perspective, and a survey and discussion of some main questions and issues that stress contemporary urban planning practices and tools.

Risultati di apprendimento attesi

At the end of the course, as an outcome both of lectures and bibliographical readings, in the final oral interview students are expected to demonstrate:

- awareness of the multiple dimensions and complexities of contemporary urban design;

- capacity to understand the physical organization of urban fabrics;

- awareness of the historical roots of urban design and of its contemporary trajectories;

- awareness of challenges, perspectives and approaches in urbanism of today;

- capacity to manage and discuss issues and key concepts of contemporary debate and practice in urbanism;

- awareness of the specific role of planning tools in shaping the form of the project.

Through the practical tasks of the course students are expected to demonstrate:

- capability to collect, read, describe and review contemporary urban plans and projects;

- capability to comment them in a critical understanding of their choices and technical forms;

- capability to communicate all that in effective products and formats (i.e., a paper, a poster, a presentation, etc.).

Argomenti trattati

The module Urbanism: Issues and Tools will provide a short discussion about the contemporary city’s phenomenon and its features reaffirming the usefulness and necessity of a “compositional” approach in planning – looking for renewed and meaningful spatial re-organizations in the heterogeneous and stratified urban scenarios of today in order to gain better habitability conditions. Then, also through examples and case studies of planning practice, some key words and key concepts of today’s Urbanism will be investigated to focus on both planning issues and challenges as well as the possible tools and forms of project to address them.

Considering all the aspects involved in urban transformations the Urban design portion of this class will concentrate on the spatial quality of the built environment. This module will be oriented to foster the capacity of understanding the physical organization of the contemporary urban landscape making students aware of central design concepts in the urban projects of today. After a short introduction to the relevance of Urban Design today, some main topics will be covered: nature and dimensions of urban design; basics in urban morphology; urban space systems; urban design theories from modernism to today.

The course is located at the beginning of the MSc path and is conceived to merge together students with different previous formative experiences and provide them a common ground. Therefore no specific prerequisites are required.

Modalità di valutazione

The final mark will combine together the evaluation of an assigned task (50%) and the assessment of a final oral examination (50%).

  1. Practical tasks

Attending students, in groups of three people, will develop throughout the course a critical review – consisting of a poster and a presentation – about a case study of a contemporary urban plan or urban project. This critical review will be deepened, updated and revised throughout the semester, and presented in a final seminar.

Non-attending students – who will work individually – are required to write a paper about a case study of a contemporary urban plan or urban project and to submit it by the end of the course (to take the final exam in January/February 2019), or by the end of May 2019 (to take the final exam in June/July or September 2019).

Detailed instructions for both attending and non-attending students will be provided on the BEEP online platform.

  1. Oral examination

The final oral exam about the contents of the course and the official list of bibliographical references is mandatory for both attending and non-attending students.

The list of bibliographic references for the final oral exam will be provided at the beginning of the course, and uploaded on the BEEP online platform.
