The main objective of the course is to gain the awareness of respectfully intervening on the historic built environment and to valorize its potential without wasting its peculiar authenticity.
The course explains the fundamental of conservation theories and history of objects and sites that have the recognizable value of a unique historical document , with respect to the material culture, a high expressive quality, both under protection and without legal boundary.
The further objectives of the class are to share methodologies and techniques for strengthening and protecting the historic buildings, show the whole process of conservation from the documentation, assessment, surface mappings and further steps towards the implementation of the building performances. The interlocked aims of the class are the transmission of the body of knowledge of preservation technologies and the perspective of conservation as a continuous process of knowledge and care of the historic built environment.
The main objective is to increase the understanding of the intervention of conservation of built environment and its valorization. The studio focuses on some study cases with the aim to support and develop the learning skills as well as the technical, scientific knowledge. In fact the studio improves the analyis skills based on the historic documentation, the survey of the geometry and structures, the material and damage assessment by means of direct visual analysis and diagnostics technologies,
Risultati di apprendimento attesi
Course of conservation
Lectures, videos, discussions, visits, seminars aim to lead to students to:
Understand the different aims of intervention on historic built environment
Have the professional methodology to develop the required analysis and survey on historic fabric.
Manage the gathered multidisciplinary information resulting from the analysis phase.
Focus on the priorities of intervention according to the conservation project.
Acquire the knowledge of the past and present philosophy regarding restoration in Italy and abroad, with references to scholars, professionals and study cases presented during the lectures.
Achieve the method to balance the issue of conservation of historic features and matter and the use and valorisation of the historic buildings and fabric.
Know standards and regulation about the protection of cultural heritage (historic buildings) and the sustainable improvement of their performances in Italy and Europe.
The students, gathered in small groups, attend the practices of surveys and analysis on a building of Industrial Heritage in Lecco and Milan.
The professors and assistants lead the practices on site and give direction and information for obtaining the required data.
The practices and the review of the surveys (both on site and in the classrooms) will stimulate the growth of a personal view leading the choices of the projects. and to apply The application of the conservation criteria on a complex project, as the intervention of the historic buildings and sites is, will improve the skills of making judgements and the communication. The development of the required sensitivity for preserving, managing, and restoring the historic fabric and propose strategic solutions taking into consideration the potential of the surrounding evironment.
The particular care to the graphic and oral espression of the project will improve the communication skill, also by meeting the stake holders (owners, public administration, building managers, local population, etc) and effectively presenting the final project

Italian legal framework, references to the international standard and laws
The project of restoration, methodologies;
Survey of geometry, application of survey for the analysis of the building evolution in time;
Historical materials, their characterization, documentation;
Historical structures and their damages;
Preservation technologies for repairing/strengthening historic fabric and materials;
Strategy to choose the new use for the valorization of historic settlements/fabric/buildings;

The analysis, survey, assessment follow rigorous scientific methods and procedures, those support the development of the project of conservation intervention and valorization.
Special focus will be on the structural assessment, diagostics, the economic and environmental sustainability of the projects and the communication (oral, graphic and wirtten) of the project.
The didactic activities includes includes the transmitting the information of particular conservation technologies, related to the study cases, visits and meeting with professionels. The practices on the sites are 4-6 and will be devoted to the geometric survey, materials and damage surface mapping. The project will be submitted to frequent reviews. Detailed information and review of the communication method of the technical aspects will gradually improve the students skills.
Modalità di valutazione
Course of conservation
The final evaluation of the individual student learning merges the results of all the activities of the course and the studio.
To verify the achievement of the expected results, with respect of the 5 Dublin descriptors, the professor will give a mid term written text and final oral exam.
At the end of the lectures regarding the history of restoration (half of April), the attendant students can take a mid term test including about 12/15 questions that should be answered in about 10 lines. A second test will be available in the third week of may for all the students, including the ones that missed or failed or want to increase the mark obtained in the mid term test of april. The tests will substitute the oral exam, in case the mark will be above 18/30 and if the student accepts the evaluation. Oral exam is due for the students that did not pass the tests or want to increase the mark of the test.
The questions to answer will regard the topic of the lectures and suggested bibliography. It is not possible to pass the test and oral exam only memorizing the slides of the lectures. Many information are in the bibliography that is a constant reference of the slides. The evaluation of answers will take into consideration the level/completeness/accuracy of information and the capacity of the student to develop an articulated thought about the memorized contents, including the specific dictionary of the discipline.
The mark of studio is 40% of the final evaluation. The final oral exam (or mid term written text or the next one) regarding the references (history and theories of restoration/conservation, documents, charters) presented in the lectures and in the recommended bibliography will give 60% of the final evaluation.
The evaluation will be the average of the midterm due date (submission of the survey and surface mapping) and the final presentation of the project of conservation and valorization of the sudy cases.
Attendancy is mandatory for the admission to the final presentation and evaluation.
The students will obtain the evaluation of the conservation project (including a complete report of all the phases of the project and the technical drawings) at the submission and presentation of the project, the last day of the class.
The professors and assistants will evaluate the applying knowledge and understanding that the students will show by the public presentation of their projects and technical documents annected. The evaluation criteria are the proper application of the restoration procedures and methods on the study cases,, a clear development of the project technical documents and details from the references (lectures and bibliography), graphic care, precision, effectivenes, completenss of information, good capacity of synthesis and communication (oral, written and graphic) of the project. The jury will include also the stake holders. A sufficient evaluation (18/30) of the project is necessary to access the oral /written exam of Conservation (course).
