NEW CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS

Envisioning tomorrow's spaces of cultural production

How to imagine and manage tomorrow's spaces of cultural production? Which models and spaces accompany these processes?

Numerous new cultural institutions have flourished in Milan in recent years, with different approaches and different forms of management: from the Fondazione Feltrinelli to Base, from Fondazione Prada to Mare Culturale Urbano, from Stecca 3.0 to Macao, each of which declines in its own way the cultural unrest of the city of Milan of the last decade. The models are many and varied, cultural promoters range from private foundations to cultural companies, from associations to informal groups, according to management models ranging from private property to affiliation through tender to a public good, from temporary re-use to the informal re-activation of abandoned public goods.

This course will dig into the different articulations of New Cultural Institutions, looking at their ancestors in the history of architecture and design, from the Fun Palace by Cedric Price through the Centre Pompidou by Rogers & Piano to The Shed by Diller & Scofidio, exploring the management structures that hold them and finally unfolding their potential development in terms of space, program, governance. The course will then actively engage with one specific Milanese New Cultural Institution: Macao.

Macao, a new center for arts, culture and research, is an independent space born with the occupation of the Galfa Tower in 2012 and subsequently relocated from the then public administration in the former slaughterhouse in Via Molise 68, and in these months is undergoing a profound transformation as a consequence of the urban affair of which, in spite of it, is part. Currently, a negotiating table is in place between the City of Milan and Macao, aiming at identifying the viable alternatives so that the space and the activities that take place within it fall within a regulatory framework recognized by the administration.

As a place actively involved in imagining and activating innovative models of cultural space management, Macao is not only a privileged observatory of the transformations of the city. It is an open, participative, independent lab that operates at various levels: from urban to design, from architecture to art and involving a multitude of other disciplines, from the more technical (structural engineering, technical physics, acoustic engineering) to the most artistic ones (sociology, anthropology, fine arts in general).

A Laboratory for Arts, Architecture, City

The didactic proposal starts from these premises by working on the activation of an Art, Architecture and City Lab that observes the current political and urban process, actively interacting with it. The idea is that students, after a first period of in-depth analysis of the urban planning rules and related policy issues, concentrate on envisioning spaces that will be identified together with the community to animate the cultural center as meaningful in order to reflect and actively interact with the current and future evolution of the space.
