Course objectives and content
The course aims at preparing students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for an advanced use of numerical simulations with the Finite Element Method (FEM), as currently used for the design of metal forming and removal processes. It initially provides the students a framework of modern techniques and applications of virtual manufacturing. Then, it provides the essential theoretical foundations use of FEM simulation on the behavior of solids under large plastic deformation and fracture. The main peculiar issues of the simulation of massive and sheet plastic deformation processes and of material removal processes.

  • Introduction to virtual manufacturing methods and applications; the simulation of manufacturing processes and machines
  • Analytical modeling of manufacturing processes: Fundamentals of plasticity of metals: yield criteria, hardening laws
  • FEM simulation of materials at large deformations: the finite element method, visco-plastic approach and implicit integration under stationary conditions, elastic-plastic approach with explicit time integration under transient conditions
  • FEM simulation of bulk metal forming processes: selection of elements, mesh building, contact problem, remeshing algorithms, thermal conduction, tools and dies elasticity
  • FEM simulation of material removal processes: fracture criteria, tool wear models, heat exchange problems at the tool-chip interface, contact problem
  • FEM simulation of sheet and tube forming processes: selection of elements, meshing and remeshing criteria, contact algorithms, elastic springback, fracture criteria

Organization
The course is based on a mix of theoretical and practical lessons. Many hours of training are provided on the computer, while learning the use of some large commercial software packages for virtual manufacturing.


Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

Students will have to carry out, in small groups, a process simulation project.
The final test will be a brief oral discussion that includes the presentation of the project.
