Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

Design of audiovisual and multimedia languages

This course aims to explore the capability of designers to conceive and develop brilliant and unprecedented ideas about how to use and valorize cultural and artistic initiatives as business entrepreneurship, leveraging on professional amateurism, people's self organization and collaboration.
The observation of the state of the art within the context of the cultural and creative sector shows the tendency to develop the audience engagement and the community development (see Creative Europe funding program). Our field of work will be at the crossroads of culture, entertainment and business, and we will focus on the new frontiers of cinema and audiovisual experiences. Starting from the cinematographic language and culture, our goal will be developing participatory experiences with a huge impact on the audiences. We will be working within the larger framework of audiovisual and multimedia languages and productions in order to provide a wide range of tools and representation forms to the creative and cultural sectors and productions. The design projects will exploit the communicative power of the audiovisual combined with a cross-media distribution in order to expand the narratives on the online and offline channels.

Design questions: How can we, as product service systems designers, trigger and support cultural initiatives in which the experience pushes users beyond their passive role? How can we engage the audience in a unique experience (B2C)? How can we engage stakeholders in joining a cultural enterprise (B2B)?

We will feed our imagination with blue-sky research and case studies. We will use multimedia and audiovisual communication techniques: storytelling, scriptwriting, storyboarding and representation tools, shooting and editing. Design proposals and prototypes will be presented to a selected group of stakeholders (B2B orB2C communication) collecting their feedbacks and declarations of interest. The experience will be a simulation of one of the following fruition contexts: a communication action for building the audience (early adopters); meetings/interviews/demos to creative directors, producers and accounts from communication agencies; meetings/interviews/demos to marketing directors from brands and enterprises; meetings/interviews/demos to distributors of the film and television industries; meetings/interviews/demos to locations owners and cultural institutions.

The course is based both on lectures, exercises and seminars. The students will work in groups. One individual exercise and one individual mid-term assignment are also required.

This course integrates contributions from different areas of design (Communication Design, Movie Design, Media Design), the arts and professional filmmaking in order to provide participants with a comprehensive experience of communicating a service.

The course is based on four main areas of competences:
•Audiovisual:
◦the basics of audiovisual language;
◦perspectives and developments of the audiovisual – case studies and guests about cinema and broadcasting experiences;
◦focus on different genres and formats.
•Narratives (world building, narrative structures, degrees of narrativity).
•Digital media, transmedia and crossmedia.
•Strategy:
◦basics on communication strategies;
◦the strategic use of digital media for engaging stakeholders and final users in participating to the narrative/performative process.

Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

Evaluation criteria and final exam

The course is organised around exercises and assignments that, together with the exam’s discussion, will bring to the final evaluation.

Students will work in teams, each one developing an original project: the final evaluation will be the average of the marks obtained in the assignments and the concluding presentation/performance (Final exam).

The evaluation criteria for this course will be based upon the student's capability to get into the topic, to generate, to develop and present innovative ideas, following and interpreting the process suggested by the instructors. A good capability of team working and a pro-active participation to the course will be also considered very positively.

Course’s rules

Attendance is mandatory: only a maximum of 2 absences will be allowed. Participation to the collective presentations and the moments of delivery of the assignments are mandatory.

Assignments cannot be delivered or presented in dates different than those scheduled in the course’s calendar.

Sufficient marks are equal or major than 18/30.
