Interactive Transmedia Narrative for New Media

School of Design, Politecnico di Milano

Professors: Mariana Ciancia & Ilaria Mariani

Course Description & Learning Outcomes

The contemporary widespread use of digital videos, games, pictures, audio and text and their distribution across media leads to the rise of new consumption behaviours and the spread of new interactive narrative forms. Thus, storytelling practices represent both a spontaneous way for producing and sharing content and a design field to be explored further.

In this course we investigate how to conceptualise and design interactive narratives for new digital media (e.g. interactive television/cinema, games and media art/exhibitions). Investigation includes storytelling structures for writing concepts and content for narrative interactive/generative (audiovisual) new media work, from personal media to community experiences.

The specific properties of interactive narratives are dealt in the levels of:

  1. Story, storyworld, character and interactive system logic: theme, structure and character/agent/player/user relationships;

  2. Language/media: participatory expression from text to moving image and spatial narratives;

  3. Rhetorics of expression: style/genre and production values, ethics of aesthetics.

The design exercise is also discussed by the viewing and analysis of audiovisual work from movies and TV series to games. Knowledge achieved is directly applied into exercises.

Course Format and Learning Modes

The course is composed of lecture sessions – devoted to lectures, discussion and critique –, and design studio sessions – spent on working on the assignments and design exercises.
Learning modes consist of articles reading, lecture presentations, seminars, discussions, existing work analysis, own design exercise, own work presentations, demos and their review.

Learning Outcomes

  • basic knowledge of interactive narrative, its concepts, vocabulary and production as applied in media;

  • knowledge on how to use the interactive narrative approaches in one’s own design and artistic work;

  • teamwork and communication skills;

  • group work demos.
