Objectives and scope

The course is a combination of 2 modules: "inventive design and problem solving" and "innovation and intellectual property management". Overall it aims at providing theoretical competences and practical skills about the most recent methodologies for systematic innovation of products and processes with a focus on both strategical and operational aspects.

More in details, the module "inventive design and problem solving" covers a range of techniques and tools supporting technical creativity such as Brainstorming, TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving), Biologically-Inspired Design, Value Analysis, etc. Attendees will be involved in individual and collaborative creative sessions, and will experience the support provided by Computer-Aided Innovation (CAI) tools and ICT technologies enhancing creativity. The module "innovation and intellectual property management" consists of two complementary parts: the first concerns the exploitation of patents as a source of technical information for competitive intelligence and information extraction supporting innovation activities. This part of the program covers Intellectual Property fundamentals and patentability criteria; it provides theoretical and practical skills for patent search and patent analysis, both through manual and computer-based tools. The second part of the module is dedicated to a survey of the main mechanisms characterizing the competition between alternative technologies, the main models describing the dynamics of innovation and to a detailed description of the most recent technology forecasting methodologies.

 

Detailed description of topics (inventive design and problem solving)

Product development cycle and innovation. Technical creativity, dimensions, features and assessment criteria.

Psychological methods supporting technical creativity: brainstorming, synectics, six thinking hats.

Elements of Systematic Design: Function-Behaviour-Structure, EMS function modelling, Conceptual Design phases.

Cognitive aspects of designing.

Introduction and fundamentals of TRIZ, Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. Reference models of TRIZ: problem solving process (Hill model, Tongs model, Funnel model); representation of technical systems, problems and solutions (ENV model, Function model, Su-Field model, Contradiction model); reference models for robust thinking (System Operator). Instruments for developing conceptual solutions: System of Inventive Standards; pointers to physical, chemical and geometrical effects. Instruments for overcoming contradictions: Analysis of Contradictions, 40 Inventive Principles, Separation principles, ARIZ.

Bio-Inspired Design: aims and scopes, methods to search for bio-inspired solutions and their transfer into technical implementations. Reference models: SAPPhIRE, DANE, Biomimicry thinking, UNO-BID.

Value Analysis: Value Engineering techniques for product analysis. Process Value Analysis (PVA).

Detailed description of topics (innovation and intellectual property management)

Intellectual Property: fundamentals, patentability criteria, patent application process (IT, EP, PCT). Structure and features of a patent document. Patent search: patent databases, functionalities and limitations. Patent classifications: IPC, ECLA, FI, CPC. Patent analysis: statistical analysis and bibliometrics. Patent strategies and techniques for patent breaking.

Text-mining fundamentals. Compute-based applications for patent mining.  

Technological diffusion: from invention to innovation. Competitive product development and Knowledge needs. Competition models: pure competition, pray/predator, symbiotic, parasitic. Types and Patterns of Innovation: product/process, breakthrough/incremental, competence enhancing/competence destroying.

Innovation from the user’s perspective: customer requirements classification models, value innovation.

Methods and tools for Technology Forecasting: classification, potentialities and limitations. Exemplary techniques for Technology Forecasting: Delphi Method; Logistic growth model, Logistic Substitution model; Innovation diffusion models; TRIZ-based forecasting. FORMAT Methodology: phases and tasks of a technology forecasting activity.


Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

The course consists of lectures and practice sessions, including a collaborative project driven by an industrial case study proposed by partner companies.

The evaluation is based on an individual written test based on the practical sessions proposed in the semester (50%) and on a project work developed in team (50%) evaluated also by industry executives.
