Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The goal of the course is to discuss how Service Oriented Computing and Business Process Management have an impact in the organizations from a theoretical and practical standpoint. Methods, tools, and methodologies for designing, implementing, executing, and managing services and processes are presented. Theoretical foundations of BPM will be presented as a way for validate and verify properties over a process model.

Commercial and open-source suites will be presented and made available to the students for modeling and implementing services and processes. Small projects will be developed during the course and they might be part of the final evaluation.

Topics

Introduction.

- Information Systems design: a service oriented approach

- Fundamentals of Process Aware Information Systems

- From workflow management to the Business Process Management: the BPM life-cycle

Service design

- Functional perspective: syntactic-based description, semantic-based description

- Non-functional perspective: modeling and monitoring quality

Service execution

- architectures for running web services (REST and SOAP)

- hands-on session with node.js

Process Design

- control flow based modeling (advanced constructs of BPMN)

- data-based modeling (GSM, CMMN)

- theoretical foundation of Business Process design

Process Execution

- how to make a business process executable

- exception handling

- hands-on session (based on BPM suites)

Process Monitoring and Process Mining

Notes:

- Thesis topics associated to the contents of the course are available.

Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

Evaluation consists of:

- a written exam where the students have to model processes and services using the notation introduced (max mark 16).

- an oral exam focused on the theoretical aspects of the course (max mark 16).

Students can work on a project which requires the development of small processes based on services that must be designed according to the methods and techniques introduced during the course (max mark 24). In this case, the written exam is not requested and the oral exam becomes optional (max mark 8).
