Programma sintetico (italiano)

Il corso si propone di fornire tutte le competenze necessarie ad implementare in modo efficace modelli per le decisioni strategiche ed operative e metodologie per la gestione ambientale e dell’energia in campo industriale. Gli obiettivi del corso sono i seguenti: valutare dal punto di vista economico l’adozione di tecnologie in efficienza energetica e il ricorso a fonti rinnovabili di energia; introdurre metodologie analitiche quantitative nel campo dell’efficienza energetica e dell’eco-efficienza di processi produttivi e supply chain; discuter il concetto di energy communities analizzando i business models delle imprese operanti in questo ambito.

 

Programm (English)

The course deals with the practical implementation of strategic and operational decision models and methods for energy and environmental management in industry. The goals of the course are as follows: to assess from an economic perspective the adoption of technologies in the energy efficiency and renewables domains; to introduce quantitative analytical methods for energy efficiency and eco-efficiency improvement of production processes and supply chains; to discuss the concept of energy communities and to analyse potential business models of companies operating in this domains.

Complete programm

1)       Objects and Contents

The course deals with energy and environmental management under the perspective of integrating energy and environmental performance into company operations. The goals of the course are as follows: to assess from an economic perspective the adoption of technologies in the energy efficiency and renewables domains; to introduce quantitative analytical methods and investigate their application to production processes; to discuss the concept of energy communities and to analyse potential business models of companies operating in this domains. Emphasis is given to the evaluation of energy performance within production systems, potential of energy-efficient technologies and services, analysis of the non-energy benefits, as well as life cycle assessment of products.

 

2)       Description of the topics

Economic assessment of Energy efficiency technologies in industrial buildings. Main sources of energy production and consumption in industrial buildings; critical analysis of available technologies for improving energy efficiency in industrial buildings; tools and methodologies of economic assessment of energy efficiency technologies.

Energy efficiency in production and operations: Relevance of energy issues for corporate performance, opportunities for energy efficiency improvements in industry, critical analysis of energy assessment methods, characterization of non-energy benefits.

Eco-efficiency in production and operations: Methodologies for evaluating and integrating eco-efficiency corporate performance: Inventory Analysis methods; Strategic Impact Assessment and Deployment; Activity-Based Environmental costing.

Eco-design of product-systems: Product-Service life cycle design and management. Methodological overview of green product design. Life Cycle Assessment.

Economic assessment of investments in Renewable Energy Sources, Storage and Smart Grid Systems, and Electric Mobility. Advanced tools and methodologies of economic assessment of investments in energy related industries; financing mechanisms (bank debts, bonds, project finance, …) in energy related industries.

Energy communities and Circular Economy business models. The concept of energy communities, integrating multi-sources production and consumption of energy; the concept of circular businesses (cradle-to-cradle) for reducing energy consumption and increasing resource efficiency; new scenarios and business models of companies in the energy industry.

3)       Course organization and exam

The course is organised into lecture lessons, discussion of case studies, testimonials from industry, in-class exercises and a project work. Grading / Student evaluation will be based on the discussion of the project work (50%), followed by an oral part (50%), that will be taken during examination sessions.
