After a review of the basic aspects of the Finite Element Method for linear problems, the course introduces some representative nonlinear problems (pertaining to the structural mechanics context) and illustrates iterative (and iterative/incremental) solution procedures based on FEM, with special attention to elastoplasticity. Subsequently, examples of coupled problem analyzed by the FEM are also described. Finally a concise introduction to integral equation techniques is given.
In more detail, the content of the course is the following.
- Review of the FE method (displacement approach) applied to linear elastic problems in solid and structural mechanics. Formulation of some "potential problems" in 2D (heat transfer, taut membrane under a transverse loading, flow in porou media, torsion in bars) and derivation of the FE equations. Multi-point constraints, using Lagrange multipliers or penalty method.
- Operative aspects of the use of a general-purpose finite element code.
- Non-linear FE analyses (material/geometric nonlinearities); iterative (Newton-Ralphson) and incremetal strategies. Example of geometrically nonlinear problems: cables and cable-nets. Examples of simple systems with nonlinear elastic constitutive law. Knowledge and use of some matlabe codes made available by the instructors.
- Elastic-plastic analysis of solids and structures (von Mises elastoplasticity, linear hardening); finite-step problem in 1D and 3D context; solution of example problems.
- Examples of coupled problems by the FE method.
- Boundary element method for linear problems. "Potential problems" and elastostatics: fundamental solutions and generation of the integral equations, discretization, zone-wise techniques, examples of applications.

At the end of the course there will be a written exam: students have to answer questions taken at random from a predefined list of questions. Each student has also to carry out an in-depth study on one/two topics among those dealt with in the course, writing a report which contains some computational work.
