The aim of the class is to give to the student the ability to design usable interfaces.
Lessons will give the basic concepts of ergonomics, workshop will put them in practice.
LESSONS:
Theory of usability and human machine interaction
- Quality, usability and ergonomics
- Unusable
- ISO9241-10: the seven principles and examples
- Needs-artifact cycle
- User centered design, requirements, user’s cases, usage environments.
- Neuro and emotional design
- Visual perception
- Gestalt principles and its application to interface design
Declination
- Theory of colours
- Usage of colours
- Order, equilibrium and time
- Haptics, sound, augmented reality
- Designing for errors situations: errors prevention and errors management
- Form design
- Usage of text: elements of typography, legibility and readability
In practice
- Agile design approach
- Prototyping
- Usability evaluation, benchmark and checkup of interfaces
- What is behind the scenes? Basics of HTML and CSS coding and responsive design
- Analysis of some common widgets used in web pages
WORKSHOPS:
Interface usability analysis and proposal for a better usability and ergonomics related design
Groups of 2-3 students will choose a web site, analyze it from the point of view of usability, make a benchmark with competitors and similar webs and prepare a formal analysis document and presentation.
A prototype of page improvement will be designed.
The idea is to simulate the practical condition of having a customer ask us where to invest some money to make a better website from the point of view of usability.
Curriculum vitae and portfolio design
Each of the student will prepare a short CV and write the code with at least two different CSS giving to the same HTML content two different formats.
This will give to the student some important knoledge on what is "under the cover" of an interface and make interaction of programmers in therir future working environement easier and more productive.
Last but not least a designer should never introduce himself with a presentation or with a paper document!
