Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The course consists in two different complementary modules of: 1) Cultural Heritage Law 2)  Economical  Appraisal.

The aim of the course is to provide students with a general overview of International, European and Italian legislation with regard to cultural and natural heritage. It will also introduce the main principles of historic preservation planning and it will provide an overview of key concepts, issues, methods and tools.. The second module will concern a focus on emerging architecture and designs practise and technologies in Australia and Southeast Asia, in particular Singapore.

I Module: 

CULTURAL HERITAGE LAW

  1. Definitions of Cultural and Natural Heritage
  2. National, international and European law concerning cultural heritage;
  3. Cultural heritage conventions and other instruments: in particular, the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention concerning the protection of world cultural and natural heritage
  4. Italy’s cultural heritage and landscape code (Legislative Decree no. 42/2004):

Historical development of the legislation

The notions of protection and promotion of cultural heritage

The administrative organization of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities

The notion and means of identification of cultural property

Criminal and administrative sanctions for offences involving cultural heritage

 Urban preservation law - Heritage preservation and protection.

 

 II Module: 

ECONOMICAL APPRAISAL

 The course will have three learning modes – from a lecturer led to a studio mode where students will apply lessons learned at an earlier stage, as follows:

  1. Lecture type mode e.g. Whole of life-cycle architecture approaches in Australia and Singapore.
  2. Case Studies: interactive class critique of selected architectural projects from Australia and Singapore.
  3. Design studio: Architecture and life-cycle studio facilitated by the lecturer.

 

The course will illustrate Australian and Singaporean approaches to architectural design, building processes and material technologies including aspects of sustainability and whole of life-cycle approaches to:

  • Architecture of new facilities
  • Interventions of heritage facilities
  • Upgrades to existing facilities
