Programma dettagliato e risultati di apprendimento attesi

The primary goal of the course is to finalize skills in dynamic and interactive representation of urban space for design, from the architectural to the city scale. In this sense, the educational and research activities conducted by the Urban Simulation Laboratory "Fausto Curti" of the Politecnico di Milano, will be fundamental. Applications of novel tools for the design and planning practice will be explored along the course; in particular, students will make use of immersive Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality solutions.

In terms of contents, the course aims at linking the themes of morphological analysis and urban design to those of perception and communication: it will expand the traditional principles of modeling towards a combined use of both physical and digital models, capable of exploring and depicting both conceptual and perceptual aspects of the urban environment. Lectures are complemented by practical experiments according to 'learn by doing' (Schön) principles. This approach will test the effectiveness of spatial models in the phases of analysis and design of architectural and urban design projects, in order to study and verify morphological and spatial relationships. Moreover, it will investigate the relationship between plan structure and three-dimensional urban form from the experiential point of view. Thus, for example, the view of public space and of the built environment from the street, will be enriched by the representation of some contextual conditions such as solar radiation at different stages of the day and seasons; these aspects will be tackled in a dynamic crux, aiming at reading the outcomes connected to the everyday experience of the city.

In addition, beyond providing the theoretical perspective necessary for a conscious use of simulation techniques in the analytical, planning, and sharing phases of design projects, the course also aims at stimulating the development of a critical view of the simulations that describe urban projects across different media.

The course will develop a case study application that will be used to put in practice and verify the fruitful application of the theoretical background. The course will be therefore organized in lectures and laboratory activities (exercises). Collective periodic revisions will be made to show the progress of the course.

Note Sulla Modalità di valutazione

For the evaluation of the students attending the course, the following methods will be applied:

- Oral presentation: presentation (group or individual) of the activities performed in the programme.

- Assessment (group or individual) of the activities performed in the experimental excercises proposed in the course.

- Assessment of the theoretical bases of the course.

For students not attending the course, the program will be arranged with the teacher responsible of the specific course and proportional to number of credits.
